Morsy was the driving force 17:34 - Aug 23 with 869 viewsonceablue

Mckenna’s right hand man.

Although it was Cook that bought him.

Can we ever replace him?

Was so instrumental in everything we achieved.

He was very important. Azor’s a good player but not the leader Morsy was. We’ve lost Burgess too who was also a leader. Of course Morsy is replaceable (we’ve had much better in the past), but he’s a loss nonetheless. It’s a shame we didn’t try a bit harder to keep him for another year.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

People don't get what a massive loss he was, nothing weve signed are remotely close to replacing him.

There's not many midfielders who have the ability to take the ball and drive past people to start attacks. Absolutely baffling we didn't think he was crucial to what we do this season. Massive massive hole in the middle, and Matusiwa looks to be a very good footballer but not the kind of player to drive us forward.

Absolutely, how do you replace a captan/leader like him and a player that could win a 40/60 tackle and drive forward in to opposition half like him.

We miss him hugely in playing through the press, take the ball centrally turn open the whole pitch up. Hopefully Jens will add that.

We would have really wanted to keep him I’m sure but can’t compete with Kuwaiti mega salaries.

The only Muff in Town.

And to think Morsy had a year left on his contract. I am still surprised we let him leave without a transfer fee at least.

Me too. A bit too much sentimentality. Given they were paying millions on wages I’m sure they could have bunged as a million or so for a fee. It’s nothing in the grand scheme of things, but would feel a bit less like we’d gift wrapped them a present.

Matusiwa was excellent. I don't think missing Morsy was our problem today.

Agreed. I've never watched a footballer and thought "he's got balls" as much or as many times as I did with Morsy. Some players could potentially do what he did in terms of driving and passing through lines, but they don't have the balls to do it.

Massive massive hole.

His input as a captain was just as important as that as a player, maybe more so.

Maybe not our only problem but losing Sam is a big hit to take. For me we desperately need a big midfield signing.

I think that’s a bit of the easy answer tbh. Considering Matusiwa is only a few games in I think he’s going really well.

Our bigger problem is defenders aren’t sh*t scared of a Hutchinson type player. Philogene has promise but as it stands looks a bit of an overpay for me for that level of investment. Some good but not enough end product yet. Hopefully he keeps progressing and confidence increases, he’s done it at this level before.

On the right I’m interested to see what the next 9 days bring. McAteer apparently isn’t someone that takes on and beats his man often. We need that, surely. Also got to remember we spent 8M on Ogbene but he didn’t feature today, god knows feels like we are just throwing darts a bit at the moment.

We didn't need to compete with Kuwaiti mega millions this season as he had a year left on his contract.

Could have kept him for first few matches, as it would have helped the transition to this new bunch of seeming strangers.

Exactly this. God knows what he was offered to go there, but would people be happy if we'd had to match that to keep him happy here?

Sure, he was still under contract, but missing out on that 'life-changing' amount with them may have made him a different player this season.

Anyway, we can find another Morsy, teams do it all the time. Just need to trust KM to get it right.

We didn't have to match anything as Morsy was already under contract. Clubs don't usually let players leave unless their transfer valuation is met, regardless of the wages a team can offer.

Yes, hopefully we will strengthen the midfield and this will be forgotten.

Sounds like it would have been very disruptive to hold him to that one year, it certainly is a strange one as we would be so strong with Azor, Jens and Morsy

I can't believe we couldn't even have offered him an extra year.

He was worth it.
