Has anyone got some video of the penalty.. looked soft when I watched it live 17:42 - Aug 23 with 3356 viewsunstableblue

And on the replays

Greaves and defender both on ground together, contact as both got up, but more the attacker going over a static leg.. making a meal of it

But consensus it’s stonewall penalty, far from that from what I watched

The pen enabled them to change tactic, sit back and low block though. I'm not denying we had lots of time to recover, but it was a huge factor given it changed their tactics and made it a lot harder for us to score. Without the pen the game would probably have been more open, and we may well have gone on to win.

Respectfully disagree. We had 15 shots to their 2; we have almost 73% possession. We didn't lose this game because of a soft penalty; we lost this game because we were unable to capitalise on our dominance. It was on us rather than on them; we should have been out in front by the end.

Thats just not true.

We lost it because of both.

But for the pen we would probably not have lost. But for our inability to crack open a deep 10 man defence, we would not have lost.

I think it's very relevant. 8 of our starting line up were regular Premier League starters for us. We used 14 players who have premier league experience against a team which just three months ago went into their last game of the season facing relegation to League One.

Penalty or not, our team should have ben more than capable of getting points from that game yesterday.

You seem to be missing the point more since your return, I don't know whether intentially or not.

If we take our last Prem starting line-up, only 5 of those started v Preston: Walton, Davis, Morsy (C) (Luongo 88’), Chaplin (J. Clarke 70’), Cajuste (Taylor 78’), Hutchinson, Greaves, O’Shea, Hirst (Delap 70'), Broadhead (Szmodics 78’), Tuanzebe. You'd say Palmer would usually start, so I see 6. Don't know where you're getting 8 from.

Regardless, it shows the team's changed a fair bit... so it's unsurprising we'd start slowly. If you just take Delap, Hutchinson, Morsy and Tuanzebe - that's not just a huge amount of quality being removed, but a huge amout of cohesiveness. Players who know how the team plays.

So the first point you've missed is our team has been gutted, not fully replaced yet, and those we have brought in have not had long with their new team.

Preston, you say, are a team who nearly went down. Well, as I said, they've started well - undefeated, 2 wins and a draw. Also, only 4 of their starters yesterday were starters in their last game of last season, so they've massively changed that struggling team.

So your point that it's a team who nearly went down doesn't quite work. It's a different team, and seemingly an improved one given their results.

Finally, whilst we probably should have been more than capable of getting points from that game yesterday, as stated, the pen made it a lot harder as it enabled them to sit back, employ the low block, and stifle the game.

Another point you've seemingly missed.

Yes you'd like to think we'd do better, but when you apply all the context (mentioned above), the result isn't hugely surprising.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I think it's a bit of both, in all honesty. The penalty, and subsequent change in their tactics, made things a lot more difficult than they would've been.

Palmer, Davis, Greaves, O'Shea, Johnson, Philogene*, Clarke & Szmodics* were regular starters. That's my 8.

Hirst stared the last few games when we knew Delp was off and probably would have made quite a few more if he wasn't injured pre season and after the Spurs game.

Add in our subs: Chaplin, Young, McAteer, Cajuste. Plenty of Premier League experience there. More than enough to see off a team that missed relegation to League One by one point on the last day of the season.

Rather than bat this one back and forwards let's agree to disagree.

Right, so you're including two who barely played due to being injured. Bit disingenuous?

I also included Hirst.

No, let's not add in subs when you said "Starters".

And you've swerved the points about Preston.

I can see why you'd rather agree to disagree.

I really wasn't going to do this and after this post I'm out, but Szmodics (one of the injured players) was our second highest Premier League goal scorer and a regular starter before being injured. Philogene, the other inured player, played in the Premier League (and Champions League) for Villa before joining us and was a regular starter for us after he joined, scoring our two goals at Old Trafford, before he got injured. So hardly disingenuous.

As for using subs, if you had read my op that you replied to I clearly stated 8 starters and We used 14 players who have premier league experience against a team which just three months ago went into their last game of the season facing relegation to League One. So the subs were in the 14 we used.

I'd rather agree to disagree than spend my Sunday evening repeating myself over what will most likely be ten pages. If you want to claim the win then you can have that one me. It's really unimportant in the scheme of things.

They definitely made it harder for us after the goal, but for that one bad decision to define the game after the possession and shots that we had really isn't right. We should have put it away

I also don't think they would have played much different if it was 0-0. Their aim would still have been to snatch something from a set piece.

"Regular starter" Szmodics actually had just 10 starts out of the 38. I'll let others decide if that constitutes a regular starter. Your other "regular starter" Philogene had 7 starts. Playing for Villa doesn't really help the cohesion of the Ipswich team.

I'll accept your point on the subs.

You've still swerved the points about Preston.

I was more frustrated at Johnson for completely missing the header and allowing the Preston player in to cross.

It was a no brainer to play Ashley Young yesterday. We had to stop the crosses coming in and defending isn't Johnson's strong point.

Does he have any strong point?

The most experienced PL player we have he’s been a real let down
