So just 3 league games into a season and reading on here 11:29 - Aug 24 with 910 viewsKeno

We are relegation candidates
The season is over
Mike Ashton doesn’t know what he’s doing
McKenna hasn’t a clue and should be replaced by big Sam, Pardew, Megson etc
The players are crap, even the ones we haven’t signed
No one else wants to sign for anyway

All seems very reasonable and considered responses

Just remember the words of a wise man about 3 years ago

Ignore the noise
Keep the faith
Trust the process

Lovely use of hyperbole.

Love the reference to 'Mike' Ashton seamlessly lifted from an earlier doom and gloom poster. Great work!

If Mike Ashton can sign a central midfielder and a striker I much rather have him than Mark Ashton

It isn't just 3 league games.

With the exception of Villa, Chelsea and Bournemouth away we have been $hite for the large part of 2025 regardless of division or competition. Many people thought that being in the Champ playing with lesser quality teams we would improve but heck no. That's the worst of all -

Same mistakes being made. Same few underperforming players especially the useless J Clarke being started. Same few players being played out of their natural positions. Same aimless sideways and backwards passing in our own half.

POTD

The bedwetting on here has been premier league. It's been worse than Niagara Falls after 3 days of non stop rain.

We’ve won 2 home games since April 2024, Burnley lost 2 games in their promotion season last year. People are probably a right to be a little bit concerned 150M+ later with a week left in the window, no number 9 in the building and 2 points out of 9.

I’m sure it will come good, however can we stop using that dumb bedwetting phrase it’s so annoying.

I think there are more people whinging about whinging then there is whinging about the team. Which says a lot considering there has been a lot of whinging about the team.

If your point is that some viewpoints are over the top, then yes.

Clearly any calls for Big Sam or Megson are silly. I have seen no such calls. An inability to name our CEO/Chairman is also not the sign of someone whose opinion should be overly regarded (and I assume that your citing of that error is intentional).

But if your point is that what we've seen so far is good enough, or that faith must never yield to anything, including evidence, then no.

I do not have faith in anything without it being supported by evidence. The evidence that I see is that McKenna is erudite and considered, and intelligent, but that he has overperformed with the cash he's been given in only one of his seasons with Town.

We trusted the process last season and it was a disappointment. I don't put it higher than that. The premier league is a hard league. But what is the basis for having faith? Faith /that what/ anyway? Faith that some specific result will occur (top six? promotion?), or just faith that the manager must be the right man because there is some quasi-religious credo that he must be?

I'll be clear: any suggestion that McKenna should be sacked now is extremist, and I consider it to be nonsense.

But talk of faith (especially without specifying what we're supposed to have faith /in/) seems to me to constitute an assertion that the position of the manager will never be able to be called into question. That too, in my view, is extremist, and I consider it to be nonsense.

If that is not what you're saying, then when will we be allowed to drop our trust in the process, and when will we be allowed to allow our faith to dissipate? When /you/ say so? Or when the evidence suggests it? If the latter, then the discussion right now should be about the evidence.

What is the process that we're trusting, anyway? The attempted process has not occurred, Kieran admits as much. He says it's not gone how he wanted.

Relentlessly positive slogans lack meaning just as much as the most comical utterings relating to Big Sam, Megson, or even "Mike" Ashton.

That’s a well thought through post that deserves a suitable reply, so I’ll try.

As I’ve said elsewhere, last season was to some extent a free hit, this season was always the important one and in effect our situation in distorted by the surprise promotion to the prem.

The “process” was getting one league one to be an established prem league team. We had the romance of the double promotion, but now the serious work of building a sustainable team starts, and it is not easy.

3 games into that building process is too soon to judge, I faith it will happen but feel free to ask me 15 games in to the season if I feel that faith was mis-placed

Some of the reaction on here, and other places, is ridiculous and doesn’t help anyone.

Yep.

A lot of people who don't seem to know much about football sounding off at the first opportunity.

Brum (a) - nightmare opening fixture. Drew and fought well in a very scrappy game. Most sides would take a draw there this season.

Saints (H) - entertaining game. The better side against a direct promotion rival. Some good football.

Preston (a) dominated the game. Soft pen. Couldn't break low block. Work needed on new combinations in team. Frustrating.

It's obvious from the first few games that we're going to be okay but that it's going to take some time to connect a new team up. Nothing more complicated than that at the moment.
