My thoughts on todays game..... 17:45 - Aug 30 with 1225 viewsBlacknGoldnBlue

Defensively, they didn't really trouble us but 2 goals in 2 attacks is poor. We all thought our defense would be our linchpin this year but, in every game, we've looked vulnerable.
Whenever we give a penalty away its always a goal - Palmer never even looks like he's researched penalty takers and always goes too soon. I appreciate you don't expect penalty's to be saved but him (and Walton) never look like they stand a chance!
The midfield showed glimpses of what we hoped for, at times it purred but (the problem with this league) is when things purr they get kicked and the ref offered no protection. I know the midfield wasn't perfect but its still early and I'm excited to see where a creative midfielder like Nunez fits in.
We look toothless going forward, very few runs past the ball and too often we slow things down and cut back to midfield. In our promotion year (the championship one) we created and scored so much in transition but now we expect to dominate possession, we have to move the ball quicker and make the runs to create the space.
I want Hirst to succeed and it was not a dive but a clear penalty but he failed to hold up play and bring others into play. I don't think he can be our starter!
Derby didn't deserve anything as they just kicked players and then dived to waste time and unfortunately the ref fell for it.

We need a win, the team look like they've forgot how to win and what it feels like. These few weeks with some of the players will see if KM can get them working together and creating chances - something we haven't been doing so far. We have spent a lot of money and I think fans expect more and, while the majority are willing to give KM time, its very obvious the clock is ticking!

Our tendency to concede from an oppositions first or only attacks/efforts on goal grate the bejezzus out of me.

Spot on with the passing. We pass so slowly it allows the opposition to get back behind the ball, which makes it even more difficult to break teams down. We had firsthand experience last season in the EPL how effective passing the ball quickly and with purpose can be, yet we persist with this walking brand of football. It also worries me how toothless we look in the final third, we hardly create anything in open play. There’s still plenty of time to turn things around only being 4 games in, but the performances have been far from convincing, we have spells in games rather than sustained pressure. This is the time KM needs to show his worth, if he is indeed this top coach he needs to start delivering and quickly.

Hirst is excellent at this level and will be KM's first choice striker to start games. There's a reason he has the 9 shirt.

He's not going to have a great game every game. That's just football. And the striker role in a KM side is insanely hard work. You've got to sprint a marathon and remain composed for the chance that falls to you. Not easy. It's not all about goals either..

Poorer game today from him but KM has chosen him to lead the line and he will do a excellent job imo.

I want that to be true re. Hirst, but Azon caused more problems and knitted play better in 10-15 mins than Hirst did all afternoon.

I want Hirst to succeed but the majority of Hirst goals come when he's getting on balls behind the defense which isn't happening at the moment because teams are defending deep and when we break we generally slow things down!
He works hard and is usually very adept at bringing other players into the game but he's struggled to do that so far this season, and again, he hasn't had teammates run past him.

We are going to see a lot of teams like Derby at PR this season.

They played about as low a block as you can play - it is very hard to get in behind teams like that, so it's possibly not surprising that there were not lots of runs in behind, the space isn't there.

Agree that we need to move the ball quicker, this was evident in that spell after we scored.

Hirst was poor today. His touch was off and his press wasn't great. Strangely though he should've scored and should've won a penalty. What a different gloss that would've put on it!
He'll benefit from Azon being in the squad and through balls from Cajuste, Matusiwa and Nunez......eventually.

for me that's key - our pace (lack thereof) and that we telegraph where we're going from the back, just makes things so much more packed up front because the opposition have all the time in the world to get ready

Palmer, Greaves and O'Shea all have to speed up, be less obvious; painful to watch right now

I thought Hirst was really poor today, loose in possession and ball bounced off him far too easily. Not his finest hour by any stretch but no doubt he’s good player at this level. We showed some nice patterns in the first half, went to sh1t in the 2nd and gave away 2 very soft looking goals which was always going to make life hard. Derby showed a level of housery I’ve not seen at PR since league 1 I don’t think, but when we give away cheap goals like we did we give them something to defend and can’t be surprised when they play for that. Same story as Preston in that respect.

Not sure it was a day for Szmodics really, thought it was an odd change, especially against such a deep defensive line as today. He’s more of a counter, off the shoulder in behind type player but when he’s on the ball with 8 white shirts in front of him I’m not convinced he’s cute enough in possession to hurt them.

It's a matter of time for me, same tactics week in, week out. Same outcomes week in, week out. If the manager is unwilling to change his approach, and he clearly is unwilling, same as Amorim at Utd, then the only way to impart change is to hire a new manager.

A part of me thinks, however unlikely, that both Amorim & KM are unwilling to change their approach as to do so is to admit error. By not changing the approach, and results continuing to be poor, dismissal seems more likely, with the added bonus of a pay off.

The only player who seems to want to pass it quickly is Chaplin, needs 3 or 4 more players on his wavelength

Is this the same McKenna who has changed his tactics so that Davis is now playing as an inverted full back this season?

One could argue, and with a high degree of confidence, that this change isn't working out!!!

KM has shown an awful lot of tactical fluidity in his time here. We done everything from play 3 at the back, allowing Davis to bomb forward on the outside and asking Morsy and Luongo to drop and cover. To doing that and allowing both Davis and Clarke to bomb as full backs leaving 2 at the back. And last season saw us very much playing 4 at the back and seeing the wide attackers being withdrawn deeper along with the CAM so we had 5 in midfield.

Just because the line-up is announed as 4-2-3-1 doesn't mean that's the way we play every single game.

Look at how we transition once we loose the ball. Look how we counter attack.

Today, for example, we saw Greaves getting in crosses almost from the byline - I'm not sure a CB has been given that level of freedom before.

good post and i take all of your points onboard.

Davis plays all the time, regardless of form, I've read a lot of other posters on here pointing this out. but KM persists.

I generally think it has reached the stage now that opposition teams are more than happy to let us dominate possession, knowing that we don't have the ability to hurt them in the final third of the pitch.

I'm not on here to be negative, having an alternative point of view isn't being negative, although a lot of people on here seem to think it is.

You weren't being negative.

I posted a reply to Swailsy earlier about nuance, balance in terms of these things lacking on here.

He’s just got off the plane but should be starting next game, he put himself about and doesn’t even know anyone. Hirst has been poor.

I don’t want to see all these players coming in just come on with 20 to go to try and break down a low block because the others haven’t delivered.

I think for 60 minutes it was a good performance. Defensively we have shot ourselves in the foot to give the opponent a leg up in all bar the Birmingham game, and that’s a big concern. I think we can expect more from the team and there are lots of question marks over certain positions and partnerships, but ultimately I just feel a win, any win, will lift the gloom. McKenna will be under pressure to deliver, but he has shown over his four years that he has the ability to do just that.

We’ve had a chastening year so far- it’s vital for everyone- supporters included, that the win comes sooner rather than later. I was really frustrated by the second half performance, but we got a point- a scrappy point, and kept plugging away despite the Derby carry-on, poor refereeing decisions and general muddle of our team by the end. Who knows, maybe that will be an important point come the end of the season.
