They weren’t pretty to watch but Derby have gelled quickly 20:19 - Aug 30 with 916 viewsCopfordBlue

Lots of new signings in their team today and plenty to criticise them for in terms of style and approach but they certainly looked like a team.

Any team can set up like that and ruin the game. You don't need to learn many patterns of play.

In the respect that they were great at collectively falling to the floor, then yes they gelled well. Other than that they didn't give themselves a chance to do anything cohesive, they had 2 decent attacks in the whole game, looked very average in the middle and if we had a slither of cutting edge about us it would have been all over by half time.

I don’t have any issue with any style or approach tactically. It’s absolutely theirs or any sides prerogative to set up tactically however they see fit. If a team wants to park the bus that’s on them and nobody can have any complaints at all about that. There’s a distinction between tactical approach and the level of time wasting they displayed. Let’s call a spade a spade, going down every 2 minutes and feigning injury isn’t tactical, it’s cheating and it’s a blight on the game.

It's not in McKenna's DNA to set up a team to play like that, and I'm very happy that it isn't.

They clearly knew what their game plan was and delivered it. Yes it’s harder to get players to work in a cohesive unit if you’re playing a more complex, technical game but maybe sometimes you have to let that come over time whilst in the interim focusi on the simpler things that are easier to get a team to do effectively.

I am too and said that tongue in cheek but there were plenty of times
last season when a more pragmatic, result first, performance second approach would have served us well. Not even for a whole game - just the game management when we were in front. Fulham away being a good example.

I'd agree with that assessment - we were definitely a bit naïve at times.

Impossible to tell.

They spent more time on the floor than the ball did in play.

Anyone can sh*thouse and waste time all afternoon.

They were dreadful to watch and I’m not sure who is more to blame - them or the weak referee. I couldn’t watch that every week, I’m just getting bored of every shortcoming in our performances being attributed to us not having time to gel.

The start of this season is very reminiscent of Roy Keane’s first full season. The signs were there from the start early but we refused to believe what our eyes were telling us and convinced ourselves that by October all would be well. I’m completely behind KM, wouldn’t pick any other manager over him but with every game that goes by this season I’m less convinced that it’s as simple as a few more games together and we’ll have a cohesive team that are going up.

So is that the reason why we didn’t win and just about scraped a draw?

Personally I think we’ve just got too much quality in the squad to not be strong this season. It’s a long season and I think people need to hold their nerve.

A few need to get their heads out their ar5e with how teams will set up against us. We had 7 players in our squad today who cost us £8m+ and another 2 introduced to the crowd pre match. In a league of have’s and have not’s we’re very much a have. Derby are a recent L1 side who scraped survival last season, we can’t expect them to rock up at a parachute club and try and play champagne football. They came for a point and they got it. Where I draw the line is cheating, killing the game through blatant time wasting and a ref who was utterly unable to get a hold on it. It’s not good for the game or the league in general, it’s dire.

How do you counter it? A good start would be not to give away cheap goals like we have over these past 2 games. You give these sides something to hold on to and it’s not going to be pretty. We got ourselves into such a good position at h/t and managed it out dreadfully today which is the biggest frustration. O’Shea someone not converting his header, Hirst as well, a stonewall penalty on Hirst not given as well, all massive moments but we need to do our bit with what we can control and we didn’t do it well enough at both ends. We’ll get there though.

I thought Derby played pretty well in the first 30 mins. We weren't in the game until that point. Two soft goals in the second half, then they started the constant whinging & blatant time wasting, which ultimately cost them the game. They had a tough togetherness & competed 100% for everything, we haven't got that, yet. A very frustrating match to watch.

Quite! How many times did we see that deployed against us last season. A lot of the mid table teams excelled at sneaking a goal or 2 and then totally shutting the game down by delaying and disrupting. Time and time again that happened last season, as soon as we went behind you knew that was pretty much that.

Our game management is woeful, we need a few sh*those players, I'm hoping Nunez is going to be someone that brings a bit of that to the group. I hate myself for saying that because it's a vile part of the game. The trouble is IT IS part of the game now and we need to learn how to be better at it, until the authorities manage to find a way to rid it from football, at least. We don't need to go to Derby extremes but we 100% need to learn how and when to use it.

Disagree. We looked our best from half way in first half. In fact looked untouchable by playing quick passing football. Keep playing like that and we don't need of the other nonsense

Last two posts agree with...and that im afraid is down to McKenna. Its about reading the game as it unfolds and being able, (and prepared to), act upon it, and adapt and change your own ta tics. I've said it si many times, hes not showing any signs of either a willingness or is it an ability to do so.

We can have the literally the world's best players at this club and McKenna will STILL play his same way whoever the opposition, and however they play against us.

Sunderland and Leeds are already performing better in the PL than we did, and we are still unable to achieve a home win in over a year...."moaning" or just stating a fact?

We can't expect to play everyone off the park each week, that's a totally unrealistic expectation of any team. Quite often, you have to find a way. Even the best teams don't always click and have to rely on something else, which is, moe often than not nowadays, game management.
