Very brief time so far.. but not quite getting what he offers that ogbene can't but he's going off on loan.

Both seem to need the ball played ahead of them. Not really 1 on 1 takers. What am I missing here?

Nothing, neither of them are good enough for a top two championship side.

Probably that he was bought to develop and our first choice isn’t fit and the Norwegian has only just signed.

I don't really get it tbh

Norway fella needs development
Mendel in u21s needs development
Burns to come back
Ogbene needs games.

Mcateer.... not quite sure what the point of his signing was esp if its development as we have those already..

I thought we'd see today why we got him. But I dont get it.

McAteer was bought in to develop??

Hes 24 and was £11m, hopefully he should be making a big impact soon.

I’m quoting what McKenna said after signing him, so, make of that what you will.

I think you misunderstood.

Yes, he sees potential to improve him.

But at £11m, he will be expected to make an immediate impact.

I know Ogbene has pace and had a good season for Luton in the Premier League, so I was still hopeful he would put his injury behind him and come good.

McAteer cost even more money than Ogbene. I didn't see anything today to indicate he is worth it, but early days.

I didn't really know much of him before but having seen him I'm really baffled. He's a right sided Jackson without pace. Can't beat a man. Not really a step over drop shoulder winger. Just a typical runner..

McAteer was a big part of a Leicester team who comfortably won the league last time we were in it, playing for a manager very similar in style to McKenna, so to say he’s not good enough isn’t really true. He’s going to part of the squad here, it was probably too much money but he’s not a bad player.

We got noticeably worse down the right when he want off and Jaden moved to the right, as did Young after he went off as well. He’s a very similar profile to Burns.

I did say this when he signed, and got rounded on for it. I've watched him since he broke through at Leicester, he's an extremely average player, tries hard, has a little bit of pace and makes some good runs and that's IT. Technically speaking, he has nothing. He's like a fullback playing as a forward.

A mystifying signing especially at that price and the fact Leicester fans shrugged says speaks volumes.

Bit part not big part. He got a few games at the start of the season when LCFC had injuries and soon dropped out the team. Never regained his place.

I sat there watching today thinking 12m doesn't get you much. I saw nothing today to think that was a good buy.

I'm similarly waiting to understand this one. Hopeful I will with more time, which he clearly deserves, and I'm trying not to be swayed by any similarities in the transfers (Ogbene brought in late in window to cover Burns, Luton fans giddy over price, McAteer brought in late in window to take Ogbene's role, Leicester fans giddy over price, both players seemingly as you and previous clubs' fans described them, from fleeting glimpses of the latter, meanwhile a Sorba Thomas would have cost roughly £3m).

I was very surprised that we moved for him, I can't imagine he was too high up the list of potential wingers, but I can see some logic in his signing, and maybe why we moved for him.

A few times today he did make a move on his man, stayed wide and delivered a ball into the box, and although the quality was lacking the intent was there, neither Clarke nor Philogene do this. Burns does, and maybe we had hoped Ogbene would, but injuries, an ever changing team, and poor end product have worked against him. I think McAteer will be an upgrade on Ogbene, but I can't help but feel that a fit Wes is still the best option out there. Surely if we're going all in on this inverted fullback/cutting inside on the left, the right. sided player needs to be someone who can take a man on, right?!

May well end up being a decent player for the squad.

The fee however is ridiculous

As usual people are assessing a player after 1.5 games. While multiple areas of the front line are not functioning.

McAteer is a really good player and thought he did well in the first half. But if you can't get any of the wide forwards into space and 1 on 1 what do you expect? (not aimed at you Frimmers specifically)

Give the guy a chance, the issue is more in our build up play and speed through transitions. Giving the likes of McAteer and Jaden space to work in, and they will deliver that didn't happen much today. Fix that and I'm sure they will look much better players.

FWIW I really like McAteer but then I am Irish....

We’ve spent 20m to replace or supplement Burns. One’s not fit and the other is no better.

Altho is minimal time to judge a player overall you do get to get to see what type of player they are and that's really my point. I don't see what he brings or what he can become that we don't already have.

I mean stick johnson further up and you've got a runner who will try and also chase balls put through for him. But he's not gonna beat a man 1 on 1. Hasn't got fancy footwork etc.

You just cannot judge a player with his first full start at FPR in a team that is just finding it's feet or mojo etc.

McAteer is a much better player in that position than Johnson imho.

I remember posters saying the same about Morsy in his first few games. You may be right in the long run but too early to say right now.

Give the guy a break, none of our signings are going to run through a 10man low block. If anything that is my takeaway from today, is that balls were getting crossed into the box and just getting cut out as we didn't have any runners.

I'd be more critical about Hirst's performance today than McAteers.

Very brief time so far

Maybe wait a few more games to see what Kieran has in mind. Hutch took time too.

That's kinda part of my point though. Balls into the box we've seen from others.

Ogbene. Burns. Clarke. On that right side. Aren't players who beat a man 1 on 1. Mcateer doesn't seem to be that either. Hence why I'm confused by his signing and allowing ogbene to go on loan.

Did Ogbene do any better?

Our transitions are not speedy enough as many other posters have mentioned. McAteer got into some good positions but never a 1:1 duel which is what we managed to do with Burns.

As I recall the ball was spread out to Young and passed to McAteer who at time was doubled up on.

Anyhow, all I am saying is give the guy some time... if we can sort out the play behind him then you will see a different forward line in all aspect.

Without going studs in on Hirst but he didn't hold up a ball at all and allow transition speed.

Fair enough. But Hutch was a U21 player with little first team experience when we got him on loan. McAteer on the other hand has a run in the first team at Leicester and the consensus of most Leicester fans is that he is bang average at best.

Unless McK can coach him into some world-class player within a couple of weeks, I don't foresee him pulling up trees this season.

He did but hutch was a raw street footballer with the potential to be more.

Mcateer just looks to me like a typical running winger who needs balls to put in front of him..

BTW. This isn't a moan about him as a player. If we didn't have have others I'd say he's OK. But based on who else we have I just don't get what he brings that others don't. And I don't think you need a run of games to think it
