I feel Coventry have got a bargain.

Poll: Following Saints game, when will Ipswich have their next permanent signing?

Maybe they're going to use him as a replacement for Sheaf? That would be interesting.

Either way, we had to do the deal, given Kieran's decisions as to his pecking order. He will be accountable for those decisions in time, but right now we just had to do the deal. Woolfy wanted out, and you can't keep a player who's started to let that frustration spill over into social media.

What is the going rate for a ball playing centre back of championship standard who wants to move ?

Why would they use him as a replacement for a CM? They've actively been trying to sign Charlie Hughes, they'll be signing Woolfenden because they couldn't get Hughes over the line.

Personally I expected around £6-7m. Premier League experience, just signed new contract.

Time will tell who got the better deal

it was a surprise when he signed the deal, wonder if some kind of release clause (or release-gentleman's-agreement?) was included?

They're going to sign Wolf to play CM for the outgoing Sheaf? eh?

Given the silly money starting to be thrown around in this league, I'd say that's a steal for them.

Apparently worth £11-14m less than O'Shea.

Great work, McKenna and Ashton.

Got £4m combined for Woolfy and Burgess (who turned down a deal due to the length of the deal)

For

Greaves and o Shea (combined at least £30m)

I do think last years transfer window is starting to get exposed at how poor it really was.

Sorry, I should've made clear that I was being silly with the Sheaf suggestion. Ignore me.

Woolfy is, of course, one of our CDs who has been more comfortable on the ball, and so there have been occasional calls for him to be tried in the midfield. I very rarely give any credence to random suggestions that players be tried in funky positions (with apologies to the careers of Messrs Naylor and Marshall), and don't think that Woolfy in midfield is a credible suggestion. But when I read that story alongside the Sheaf one, I thought it would be interesting if that was one thought of the Coventry coaching staff.

But no. He is a centre back of the modern persuasion, and I think they have done a very good deal. It's not bad for us, IF Kieran is right that he's worse than our other options. But that remains an IF for me. See also Burgess...

Fair fair and nicely put. I struggle to sometimes see whats legitimate thoughts, tongue in cheek or even parody on here at times!

4m seems a great price for Cov. Gutted with this transfer to be honest.

Maybe the club have done what they did for Morsy and let him go for less than market rates to allow the player the move he wants. No point playing hardball for £2-3M that we don't need for a player who wants away and be playing regularly.

I think the key is "who wants to move", and also "whose club clearly rate others higher, and have made many signings including a utility defender in Furlong, such that said ball playing CB will not fit in the squad."

I suppose it's possssible that Caceres signs, but I think this will only happen if we've got a minibus of right backs ready to head out of the club to free up space. Otherwise, Furlong looks like a utility defender who avoids the need for a further CB signing.

It is all a big old shame though. We've spent a lot and not got better. (To put it really kindly).

I'd say that objectively reflects his true value. He's overrated by a section of Town fans Im afraid, and Mckenna has played him less and less for a reason.

I think Mckennna wanted to keep him as no more than back up and as an academy product he ticks that EFL squad requirement, box.

Trust the process i believe is the term used on here....

Good luck Luke, a change of scenery id needed for you i think.

I think that is the reason why McKenna wants to keep him, as well as knowing (as criticised and dismissed as he is,) we won't sign a player of his quality to simply play back up. So it's either using Furlong as a last resort or splashing out on someone like Caceres and relegating Greaves, which we have spent a hefty amount on, to the bench/stands.

Because he wants the move and possibly Coventry are the only club willing to pay what we want and that gives Woolfenden what he wants contractually and professionally?

been trying to be positive with these outgoings this season, trying to keep my sentimentality out of it. That being said, this one really, really hurts.

I know McKenna knows better than me but I can't shake the opinion that we always looked more calm and collected when Woolf played.

Hurts even more that Coventry are my Dad's team!

Yea, I get it, I just wonder if loaning him to a bottom half team might have been a better option.
