It really is a case of heart and head.

However, I don't think we'll find better than Woolfenden to fulfil the role McKenna had marked out for him - back up to O'Shea.

You're likely right, trouble is Wolfie didn't want that at all.

I can't blame him at all. He's good enough to start at this level.

That was our manager's choice.

Now, two days later, he's surplus to requirements.

Something isn't right.

Doubt he was even that any more - Kipre likely ahead of him if O' Shea is out

I wouldn't read much into it like that.

If it wasn't for the transfer window closing, Chaplin would stay until the rest of the new signings are match fit and ready.

It would not be fair to keep Chaplin now for him to drop further down the pecking order vs allow him to leave and play 1st team football regularly.

My head is very slowly starting to make its way back down to this planet, and whilst I'm still pretty annoyed by the CC decision I think we may have been backed into a bit of a corner by the 25 man squad.

Seems we may well have banked on maybe Ben Johnson and one other to move on to make the numbers, but when that didn't happen we have had to take evasive action in loaning CC out. Its any easy deal to do, as Pompey and their fans will always be keen to have Chaplin back, feel like all at the club (including potentially CC himself) will have reluctantly agreed to this one. He obviously couldn't have been considered that surplus as he literally started on Saturday...

Chaplin shouldnt be down the pecking order is the issue. He has a lot to offer in the championship. He just needed some game time to get some form back.

This team is going to take a long time to get playing as an efficient unit. I don't expect us to be challenging for promotion this season.

I see some logic, but I do understand the emotional reaction. We wait so long for a team we can really identify with, when it happened it was better than we could have ever hoped for, and 18 months later it's gone.

The 25 man squad means little. I can't believe we intended to include Harry Clarke, considering we already have three players covering right back without him.

I'd hate it if it's a numbers thing letting Chappers go and trying to get a 25 man squad and Button making up one of the 25. Should have been an underage kid being third keeper.

I'm not holding my breath that O'Shea and Greaves are either. Maybe they'll be replaced upon promotion if or when it happens.

Akpom wasn’t ready for a start, presuming he is going to play as a 10 (as seems logical). Likewise Egeli. And SS isn’t going to unlock a packed defence. Rightly or wrongly, KM clearly doesn’t see Chappers as the right level, longer term. Clearly he has a plan. And we’re gonna have to trust him.

McKenna now has " his" squad. There's no excuses niw. He has to create a promotion winning team this season from his " better", and definitely more expensive players.

Is going to be an interesting season and the clock IS ticking for this manager.
