Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? 17:11 - Sep 1 with 4372 views | CopfordBlue | If he wasn’t in the squad, wasn’t close to a starting place then it would be easier to understand the decision today. Yes we’ve got new signings who could potentially play that role but equally we had Szmodics sitting on the bench.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 20:25 - Sep 1 by PhilTWTD | As an aside to this, gather there's an option for a further year on CC's contract. Potential recall in January. |
that's interesting (but probably won't change anything, it's the hope that kills you!)

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:38 - Sep 1 by CopfordBlue | For a couple of minutes at the end of a game that was already lost. There’s no way he started him in an important game for sentimental reasons. |
I think just the simple fact that CC was the best player to start against the opposition was why he played. Then today, perhaps an offer came out of the blue and it was put to CC and he fancied it. He can see his path here for regular minutes will be limited for the time being. It helps to reduce the squad size, it helps CC stay fit and sharp, it helps us if he plays against our opponents and it helps us when we play Portsmouth if there best player can't play. I'd rather CC go get minutes and keep enjoying football, than rot on our bench for the next year.

Probably not, other than potentially getting a fee for him next summer.

Not all players get it. Unless we count Woolfenden's goodbye as Bromley away.

Hmm a bit like Young, Davis, and Chaplin, who all started at Bromley. In all honesty, I don't think so. As someone pointed out, Luongo didn't get a sentimental goodbye even after we were relegated. Anyway, there's a lot of negativity and dislike from the fanbase towards him, going off the forum, so perhaps it's best he didn't appear. [Post edited 2 Sep 0:09]

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 08:48 - Sep 2 with 162 views | sotd78 | This seems very simple to me. Chaplin on Saturday because he was fit and up to speed. Longer term he's lots down the order. He knows that. The club knows that. He goes to play somewhere he clearly loves. We keep the squad numbers correct and lose a salary presumably. There's nothing much to see here. It's sad but this is why footballers say that it is ultimately a job and that they are going to work. Playing is merely the culmination of the work they do day in and day out.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:46 - Sep 1 by Mullet | Bit of a weird downvote and reply. I didn’t say it was purely for sentimental reasons given Akpom has had an injury and new signings weren’t ready. People are all far too emotional today it seems. |
I doubt there'd be many football fans left (esp in the lower leagues) if they didn't get "far too emotional" at times.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 18:19 - Sep 1 by cressi | Makes no sense if McKenna thinks his not good enough to keep. |
There's more to it than "not good enough to keep" though isn't there? He was no fringe player, good enough to keep and sometimes to start, but this no longer guaranteed. Chaplin probably wants a bigger role and by the Derby game he knew it was looking like he was off. No huge issue for McKenna to give him one last start before the move. As has been said in this thread, his language at the end suggested he knew it. Also noted by Phil - this may not be the final goodbye. He's still our player and can be recalled, and can have a contract extension. If things are looking grim at PR come January and he's been banging them in at Portsmouth, we may well see him back again. In that sense it's a balanced risk for KM, he's hedged his bets.

You don’t okay players you want to leave. For obvious reasons. We couldn’t get the player out the door we expected. And we didn’t want 26 players and someone not in the squad. More last minute chaos, and the last leader gone.
