Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? 17:11 - Sep 1 with 3371 views | CopfordBlue | If he wasn’t in the squad, wasn’t close to a starting place then it would be easier to understand the decision today. Yes we’ve got new signings who could potentially play that role but equally we had Szmodics sitting on the bench.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:38 - Sep 1 by CopfordBlue | For a couple of minutes at the end of a game that was already lost. There’s no way he started him in an important game for sentimental reasons. |
Bit of a weird downvote and reply. I didn’t say it was purely for sentimental reasons given Akpom has had an injury and new signings weren’t ready. People are all far too emotional today it seems.

They are - a down vote in response to an explanation that didn’t make stack up has led to this reply. You’re a good man, I enjoy your posts, no offence intended, I’ll cancel it out.

No offence taken, just seemed a bit of an overreaction! The whole board feels highly charged since I got in and read up

he could've done that as a sub though edit: seen this has been covered! [Post edited 1 Sep 18:23]

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:14 - Sep 1 by GlasgowBlue | I've given my view. We thought we could offload Johnson or Harry Clarke by today. As we didn't and we were one over our limit, Chappers was sacrificed. The squad is imbalanced imo. |

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:29 - Sep 1 by Garv | Players are probably a lot less sentimental about it all than we are, I imagine they all knew/know the score. Like to think none of them have genuinely left on bad terms, especially Chappers. |
Exactly, I think we are all a bit too hung up on the love affair of the back to back promotion season, it just all went in the blink of an eye. I will reevaluate things in a month or two, as I’m sure we will push on and improve.

Don't agree with this at all. If this was the situation, we would just de-register Clarke.

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:20 - Sep 1 by ITFCSG | Precisely. For Johnson, PL teams won't want him, not even the newly promoted ones. Championship clubs can't afford him. So we are stuck. It beggars belief that this is Johnson's first season playing outside the Prem. So far he looks like some lower league signing rather than a Prem stalwart. |
Last year he looked much better as a Right Midfielder than he did as a Right Back or Right Wing Back. He didn't look out of place in the games he started, in the Premier League, at Right Midfield. He looked weak as a Right Back, though. Bizarre that he should only play Right Back this season, given the clear difference in his performances between the two positions.

Nope. He played as a false 9

Can anyone explain why Chaplin started on Saturday ? on 17:28 - Sep 1 by ArnieM | On Sat as the players came out, and Chappers ran directly towards us in the SBR clapping I turned to my mate and said, "That's Chaplin saying goodbye, and I bet he goes back to Pompey"! I find that hard to believe. Pls provide proof of this friend

“McKenna does that for players”… You’re not serious? We were 4-1 down and he gave him 1 minute. Luongo didn’t even start the last game of last season, and we were bloomin’ relegated. There’s no way he’s picked Chaplin for sentimental reasons.

....for Ogbene? If he's going there to get back in shape surely that would be sensible. Plus they are a potential rival, so we should have that option. Surely?

I struggle to see him (and Burns) have any sort of future here now we’ve spent the best part of £30m on Egeli and McAteer.

Or the other element of it is that a good season with them and we’d at least recoup what we paid, if not make a small profit. Maybe.

McAteer doesn’t look an upgrade on those two to me. Cannot for life of me see why we paid that for him either.
