Anybody on here based in Bangkok or anywhere else in Thailand? 14:03 - Sep 8 with 1727 viewsurbanblue

Heading there on Friday. It's actually a planned trip that has gone pear-shaped in that I was going to go with a mate to Hua Hin to hang out and play Golf. He's now had to pull out so I'm going on my own.

Intended to just go for a wander somewhere on my own channelling my old backpacking days, but have now discovered that it's monsoon season and it's going to be pretty wet in most areas. There has been flooding in some parts. Wanted to have a look at Chiang Mai but seems the North gets the rain worst of all. So guess I'm just going to make it up as I go along after Bangkok ...

Also hoping the game will be on somewhere even though it will be a 2am kick off locally. At least it's a city where a lot of bars will be open.

Any ideas?

I was there recently (April) and l watched the Arsenal game at Cheap Charlie's near On Nut.
I was also trying to reconnect with backpacking days and various plans to get out and about resulted in island trips, going Vietnam and finding lots to see in Bangkok. I recommend get my guide or similar for day trips.
Enjoy

I spent a year in Thailand many years ago. The monsoons generally only affect one coast of the country at a time. I can’t really remember the months and forecasting but you can plot it out to avoid the worst of the weather. I’d really recommend Chang Mai and potentially a few days trekking in the mountains - but might not be fun in torrential rain. Internal flights used to be as cheap as chips too, so it is possible to play it by ear and fly down to krabi if it’s good weather and do a few islands. You’ll easily find a bar to watch the game, even in the smallest village

Krabi, Phuket and the Andaman Islands get the Monsoon worst and I've already been to both. Flights to those and Chiang Mai are cheap. The Gulf Islands, Koh Samui are much better weather but a return flight there from Bangkok is almost as expensive as what I have paid to get to Bangkok from my home in Australia!! Seems Bangkok Airways gave the monopoly and are the only airline to fly there within Thailand. Could get a train and Boat there but all my research says not advisable during Monsoon season to rely on ferries.

In fairness, it seems that many people say it's a great time to visit as downpours can be intense but brief and interspersed with nice weather quite often. The problem is you never know. When it's a bad storm it doesn't look like fun.

Generally the rainy (monsoon) season is how you describe as short but intense downpours. It's the flooding that is the issue and it looks like there has been some pretty bad flooding in some eastern parts of Thailand over the past few days

I also recall those short downpours being fairly predictable - my experience was a daily downpour at 18:00 which was cleared by 20:00 and the rest of the time it was the usual hot sun.

TWTD is really letting me down these days.

Poster states they are going to Bangkok, references his mate pulling out and the fact it is going to be pretty wet.

And all people talk about are football shirts.

The juvenile quality on this board is almost non-existant these days.

Hey, despite what another poster said about avoiding Pattaya I’m staying in Naklua, North Pattaya. I’ve spent a lot of time in Hua Hin but came to Pattaya to work at at a big Thai engineering company. We have an ITFC Pattaya group of 8, including a Swede 🇸🇪 and a Norwegian 🇳🇴 who have supported Town for 20+ years. We meet to watch most Town matches in Witherspoons but the next match against Sheff U is a Friday night late kick-off so we won’t be meting up. If you do make it to Pattaya for a few days I’m sure you could meet up with some of the group one evening for a few pints 🍻

Do Bangkok for 2 to 3 nights then get the train to Chiang Mai if you want to go north for trekking or head south to the islands like Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui if you want a beach break. Its off season at the moment so hotel rates are at their cheapest and not so many tourists about as high season between November and April. As others have said, give Pattaya a miss. Complete sh1thole.

We have quite an active whatsapp group of Asian based town supporters, mostly expats. There's a few members in bangkok. Feel free to send me a DM and I can add you to the group.

The invitation is also open to anybody else who would like to join..

Thanks!
