If he became a bog standard Championship player then good for him personally as he's been sliding downhill for years. But clubs aren't taking him on for that - they're taking him on so they can unlock the England player from years back. Like we did with Phillips. Odds are it will be another no show.

Regardless of who might be available as a free agent, I don’t see that we’ve left a free spot in the squad. With Townsend not registered and Walle Egeli U21 not counting, we already have 25 players that will likely have been registered last week.
There won’t be anymore incoming until the next transfer window as I see it.

Taking on a career resurrection project didn't work out too well with Phillips last season. Plus I don't see we really need him.
I think the difference is that we've got a strong team now and he is a wildcard who could come good, whereas Phillips I think was relied upon to be an integral part of the team and didn't meet those expectations.
Although irrelevant unless we didn't register one of the 25 senior players we have in the team.
Not much of a discussion when we don't even have space for him.
Quite a few posts though and as several have pointed out no room for him in the squad now but not sure writing him off yet is right , remember Axel well written off on here I seem to remember.
