Sounds like from our glorious leader’s presser today, that he’s starting to manage the squad culture and morale based on the fact many good players won’t start - and some won’t even make bench - Kieran using the old long season, all about squad depth, people will get their chance and being ready etc. narrative
Did you mean Walton starting? You have him on the bench as well! If you meant Palmer starting then I think you're right.
Some of the key decisions I think are Young/Furlong and Nunez/Cajuste - for this week I reckon it will be unchanged but options to then switch things for the busier period after that.

Furlong a nailed on starter
I’d prefer Young to Johnson. But the latter gives more energy physicality and versatility I guess?
If Nunez starts in the ten, then perhaps Hirst drops to bench and Akpom as the 9?
But thought Hirst really came to life after his goal Friday; and his pressing and target qualities means he’s surely a starter?

I think technically Young is our best player by quite a way but Furlong very solid on debut and maybe that's what we need at the minute. I think between the two Young is much more likely to create chances. If we're chasing a game you could see Young being a good bench option with better passing range/dead ball delivery.

....the "finisher", as you say he's far more likely to create chances.
Options, options, all about options.
We're in a decent place at right back now.
Not so great at left back, where we've really only got cover through versatility rather than expertise.

The issue with Young as a finisher is that if we are changing the whole front four and bringing on Nunez after an hour or so, that's all five sub slots used up without him. Or one of those changes gets sacrificed.
I suppose it may to some extent depend upon the state of the game. Do we need some good free kicks/corners to break a deadlock, for example. But then Nunez can also do that.

Thinking of chance creation, don’t forget the Furlong Throw - we have yet to see it but surely we will soon, it is the stuff of legends…

I think we might only change three out the front four as a general rule. Hirst certainly, but Philogene looks like he can run all day, and Akpom and McAteer both pretty much the same. So one or two of those can not go flat out (as we did in 23/24) and give us the opportunity to make changes in midfield and defence if necessary.

Young has played at LB a lot of the last couple of years and although he's not naturally left-footed in some ways he'd be better suited to the inverted LB role that we've been experimenting with Leif. If he does have to cover for him then we might just see a tweak in some of the roles to take this into account - e.g the L10 staying much wider, etc.

I'll be surprised if Hirst drops out of the starting 11 this soon. He knows the systep and pkays too well and his defending from the front is second to none.

....shame we won't be up against Ben Godfrey every week then we wouldn't have to worry about an inverted left back.
