I'm struggling to get my head around what Israel are alleging has happened here.
"Israel says a coffin handed over by Hamas on Monday did not contain the body of another deceased hostage but more of the remains of another person held captive whose body had been previously returned.

So Hamas returned/Israel recovered the body back in 2023 and now, apparently, Hamas are sending the body back to them again? On that basis, somewhere in the intervening two years, the body ended up back in Hamas' hands?

His body was so butchered that his remains have been discovered in 3 different locations 3 different times. Does that makes sense to you?
Here is Hamas tossing some of his remains to the ground, burying them and then pretending to “find” it for the Red Cross in order to hand them back a part of the deal.

I’ve no idea who to believe in this. We know Israel are desperate for any excuse to murder Palestinians, even an invented one probably. We also know Hamas are utter arseholes and more than capable of messing everyone around over the hostage return. I wish the BBC (and other outlets) would actually investigate and validate claims rather than just report what each side says. Anyone can do that, but where’s the proper journalism?

Yes Hamas are absolute a..holes and by any measure Israel appear to have committed genocide.
All we can do is stand back and take in the big picture.
For years Israel operated a system of apartheid and displacement of Palestinians with some 14,000 or so killled over a decade leading up to the horrible killings and recent events. The killings and hostage taking were deplorable, but understandable.
Had the US and Israel taken 10% of what they have spent on this war and instead spent it to improve the lives of Palestinians they would have totally undermined support for Hamas. Instead they have enabled a genocide and served as recruiters for a fresh wave of opposition and fighters. |  | | |

Sadly it was highly predictable.
Israel never agreed to the two state solution during peace negotiations, Hamas was never going to stand down based on that. Always felt that once all the hostages (or their remains) were returned that Israel would start again as they've got what they wanted.
It's an incredibly sad cycle with both sides having legitimate reasons to fight on. |  |

I must admit I haven't read much on the subject lately, but do you give no credence at all to the suggestion that some are so buried under Israeli-made rubble mountains that the Palestinians have not the means to get at them without help which the Israelis are not letting in and would probably not come in when they might get bombed to b*ggery as well? | |

Israel has got what they wanted in getting all the alive hostages out. It feels like that was their real goal here. Not all the bodies have been returned, though I do wonder whether that is actually likely due to the destruction of Gaza. Do Hamas actually know where the bodies are these days and if they are actually accessible?
Israel hasn't been forthcoming with allowing machinery in to help Hamas locate these bodies. However i can understand their hesitancy in allowing such machinery in. | |
