I posted that only because I had no idea what you were referring to so just providing context. I didn't know there was such a license. More councils should do the same.

There is no scandal. This is just the right wing press desperately raking over anything and everything they can find to make a story out of. Funny how they weren't so scrutinous when the Tories were in power. Which is weird, given there was so much corruption and real scandal to report on.

It seems she did actually ask an expert, in this situation an Estate Agent (yes I know a money grabbing EA), and they provided the wrong device. Rayner didn't ask an expert (the person she asked actually told her she couldn't offer tax advice) with the aim of deliberately avoiding tax, so she had to go. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No evidence at all of any intention to deliberately avoid tax by Rayner. When will people stop peddling this lie?

Think you need to be a bit careful with how you've framed the Rayner situation there as you have no evidence that she intended to avoid paying the higher rate of inheritance tax. She was negligent in not seeking the right expert advice but you can't infer intent from that and would be on pretty shaky legal ground accusing her of deliberate tax avoidance.

No, it's just not remotely a scandal is it? Woman doesn't realise she needs a bit of paperwork, realises and applies for a bit of a paperwork. It's a non-story and only desperate folk like yourself and the Tories think it's anything more than that.

You don’t get it do you She is the person in charge of the Country’s finances making decisions that will affect everyone on a daily basis and she doesn’t realise she needs a bit of paper. Details of the licence are on the Council’s website. She has proven she is not fit to run the Country’s finances if she doesn’t know basic regulations like this one.

A 1degree crack is enough for most of MSN to seize upon, this however, is a non-story due to use of Estate Agents I mean WHAT IF the estate agents were Tory donors and wanted to assist them...?

I can understand people being annoyed at the Rayner one but this story feels like such a non-issue. It's not like any harm has really been done. And I say this as someone who doesn't even like Reeves that much.

Careful, someone will be along in a minute to accuse you of that good old word 'Whataboutism' (TM). (For the avoidance of doubt, I'm being sarcastic. The bias/selective myopia of papers like the Mail, whilst fully unexpected, is breathtaking at times).

I think she's pretty hopeless as chancellor but agree, this is a complete nothing story. She rented out her property and has a letting agent dealing with it on her behalf, they failed in their due diligence, she should perhaps have done a bit of her own but I imagine she's quite busy and expected a letting agent would know the rules. She hasn't gained anything financially as a result, it's a bit of paperwork ffs. People trying to draw an equivalence between stuff like this and Rishi's missus exploring the non-dom loophole when he was chancellor, Zahawi being investigated by HMRC before negotiating a settlement with them, Hunt's shady property dealings, giving hundreds of millions to their mates during COVID - the list of genuine scandals under the Tories that involved them lining their own pockets is endless. By comparison, this is literally nothing.
