| Every word... on 10:00 - Nov 8 with 792 views | GlasgowBlue | Without wishing to bring up traumatic memories for you, surely it’s better that fans are no longer squeezed in stadiums like sardines and herded by the police like animals? I don't miss people pissing down my leg twenty minutes into the match or surges that saw me knocked ten steps further down. Improvements to stadia and the match day experience means that less tribal “customers” would feel more welcome at a football match , which in turn leads to less if a traditional atmosphere. Calvin Harris providing atmosphere at half time when it should be the fans? Well the fans will be in the concourse getting a pie and a pint and the atmosphere on the concourse ore match and at half time is great. I just found the bloke’s moan reminding me of my old man when he first heard punk rock and started banging on about how things were better in his day. [Post edited 8 Nov 11:14]

FFS People being upset they cant see because you are being an ignorant tool and standing in front of kids or elderly folks at innappropriate parts of the stand? People who dont know the songs? How do people get started ffs And bemoaning the absence of proper clothing like Stone Island (whilst complaining about prices of football...). Best rid of people like this tbh.

I first started taking my boy to Portman Road when he was seven. I didn’t have to sit next to him listening to Manchester United fans chanting “ You’re going to get your fcuking head kicked in” for 90 minutes then having to run like hell with him in my arms after the game finished the way my dad did with me back in the 70’s. I see Sitters take young Robson all over the country which he wouldn’t have done in Lagos good old days. [Post edited 8 Nov 10:12]

I find away games are probably somewhat similar to whatever atmosphere was generated pre-Hillsborough in terms of persistent standing, crap view, and people being loud and lairy throughout but I personally don’t particularly enjoy that. Appreciate some people probably miss that but everyone now under the age of 35 grew up post Taylor report and as someone in that bracket I quite like things as they are. Anyone that wants a return of football violence and hooliganism though is a moron and needs to grow up and act their age.

I came here to post this, but you beat me to it. “Half and half scarfs, Tourist taking selfies”… …And people from the South East supporting “Urnitid”… Although yes, some good points. It’s been sterilised (for better and worse). It is a corporate ripoff and real fans don’t seem to be a priority.

Being corralled into your seat is the big difference. It was much better when you could be mobile and then people could cluster together depending on whether they wanted to sing or moan, or even all the kids just down the front. Obviously I understand the reasoning behind seating though. It’s safer when you have full grounds, so it’s a trade off. But we never had a problem with overcrowding at normal away games. Sellouts are only a recent thing for us because of doing well.

If you're equating "terrace culture" to violence and hooliganism then you really have little understanding of how it was. There are of course some blurred lines but there is so much that has been lost over the past 30 years that is brilliant. I don't think we should ban sitting areas and exclude those who want to sit down, eat poncy food and cheer along as music is piped out after goals. Wear your half and half scarves for all I care. I would just like to see areas of the stadium where you can stand, stand where you want (with yer mates) and enjoy the crap view and being people lairy. Why would you want to stop people doing any of those things?

You're very close to equating the football terrace culture to football hooliganism. Of course some people have always crossed the line but the vast majority who stood in the North Stand and Churchmans were not ever hooligans. As for standing - yeah - it's how 75% of fans chose to watch football back in the day - and many would like to do so again - if only those in charge actually listened to the traditional fans rather those who have only been interested in football now it's trendy.

With you on all of this. Leicester away in the promotion season - the King Power Stadium a fairly neat example of 'modern' football, insofar as everything is nice, tidy, clean, expensive and soulless. Leicester scored, of course, to rather muted celebrations; all very tame... ... and then, of course, Sarmiento scored, and none of any of that mattered. Pandemonium ensued, reminding me of why we bother to go and watch football. Don't really know what point I'm making here, other than modern football is, in the main, pretty toss.

I’m not sure safe standing is the way to go, even though it sounds good. You need to be able to move around and chose who to be with to even begin to re-capture part of what it used to be like. I don’t see why that would be too difficult given how strict entry is now. There’s no reason why you couldn’t have a terraced couple of blocks with tickets allocated as they are now. They’d still be controlling numbers, although stewarding migration into the blocks could be an issue I suppose.

I know it's always been the way - but if only we could recreate the away day atmosphere at home games...surely standing areas would be a step towards that rather than listening to that prat on the microphone as we have at the moment.

I do think the ability to stand where you want on the day (With yer mates) would be a huge help to generating atmosphere. Having standing areas (with unallocated spots) would defo help for sure.

Jesus, that bloke is diabolical! Honestly like the club has asked ChatGPT to create a 'bouncy' Master of Ceremonies - he's utterly sh1t. Let's face it, we're not alone in having a relatively sanitised atmosphere, it's been going this way for years. Case in point - Upton Park back in the day (we lost 2-1, think Marcus Bent scored) - that was a proper away day, you knew you weren't welcome, and it was consequently all the sweeter when we scored... keeping particularly quiet in the queue at Plaistow tube afterwards, surrounded by all those gleeful pricks. London Stadium last year - a sedate walk from Stratford station, through the Westfield mega-mall, and past a myriad of identical black-glass skyscrapers. 2 security checks, sat 30m away from the pitch, a gentle murmur of appreciation when West Ham score, the whole experience about as intimidating as Stansted Airport. My various Hammer mates absolutely and completely mourn the loss of their football - the club now is West Ham in name only, nothing more. (I despite the Spammers, but that's not really pertinent). Repeat at Leicester, Southampton, Man City - hell, even Colchester.
