Nunez 23:52 - Nov 9 with 2749 viewsChurchman

Watched the game fully back now.

A fit Nunez has to start for me. I like his feistiness but most particularly how aggressive he is with the ball. No messing about, he looks to move it on quickly. Decisions are not always correct but the tempo of the the team looks much quicker with him in it. Add in his ability from free kicks and as far as I’m concerned he plays week in week out where possible.

What have they done to Taylor?? He looks a different player. Solid, aggressive his passing was good too.

Clarke? MOTM. He really stretched them, gave them the runaround and I like the way he tries things. Hell of a shot on him too.

Azon - lovely to see him score. He’s clearly popular and a great character. I wouldn’t put it past him scoring a few now. I like him.

Overall we were too good for them. Concerns? A tendency to get sloppy for periods. Ten mins in the first half and part of the second. I’m hoping with games and understanding they’ll get a grip of that.

Swansea? As the commentators said, they were not the worst but obviously there will be bigger challenges. Burgess? Not his finest hour but he’s a good player who’ll have better days.

A good day and a good week.

Think we struggle to get enough players in the area when Nunez is the number 10, there were plenty of occasions on Saturday when we got in good wide positions and a Chaplin or Szmodics would be an option in or on the edge of the box but Nunez wasn't far enough up the pitch. That said, he would have scored the fourth from the edge of the six-yard box had Burgess not beaten him to it, but think it was a relatively rare foray into that sort of area.

Szmodics has had plenty of opportunities to score & fluffed his lines.

Much rather a Núñez in the 10 who can link all the play together with his passing ability, rather than a Szmodics type who probably does his best work off the ball with is counter productive for a possession based team.

Also having Nunez on the pitch gives us a freekick weapon we just haven't possessed for some years.

I can't remember the last season I was genuinely excited about winning a free kick in a dangerous position.

As a 'character' in the dressing room and around the training ground he has to be worth more to us than having him out at Pompey too. I agree with you, I'd bring him back as we have the room in the squad depth. Chaplin, Burns, Leif, Taylor, Hirst, Walton. Gives us a decent chunk of the class of 24 in and around the squad to help with the integration of the newer lot.

Walton, Palmer, Button
Furlong, Young
Leif, Johnson
O'Shea, Greaves, Kipre
Matusiwa, Taylor, Cajuste, Nunez
Philogene, Clarke
Burns, Walle-Egeli, McAteer
Szmodics, Akpom, Chaplin
Hirst, Azon

That would allow 2 to come in I think, given SWE is only 14.

Get H. Clarke, Baggott & Humphreys out on loan.

Big lad for 14!

Do you really think he's been good, Phil?! I'm flabbergasted by that, I have to say.

Szmodics is the least suited number 10 for *our* system in the squad IMO. He can't deal with the ball and feed others. Subsequently, he doesn't really get at all involved in our build-up play, to the point where we often play with ten men and SS just huffing and puffing around the final third, pressing and harrying.

I think I'm right in saying that he touched the ball like a *dozen* times in the entire match against Norwich. That's totally unacceptable from our creative central 10, surely?!

At least Akpom has the right skillset to play with his back to goal, bring the other number 10s into play and even midfielders arriving late.

I just feel that Nunez is a better version of Chaplin in the 10, minus the killer instinct/finishing ability.

Absolutely agree.

Nunez is playing that position to a completely new level compared to what Szmodics is. Szmodics is a passenger the game far too often and you are waiting for him to score essentially and that hasn't come. Nunez is popping up all over the play, linking with the midfielders, linking with the wingers. Playing balls in behind to be ran on to. Everything we need from our number 10, maybe he can add some late runs in to the box but he is clearly a very good ball striker so that will come.

We need Nunez or a Nunez type in that 10 role. Having Chaplin back in January would be ideal to rotate with him.

Totally agree with all who have said Nunez and Chaplin should be rotating for the number 10 role. And that ideally we pick up another CM in Jan to replace Nunez.

For me Akpom should be considered for the number 9 role in rotation with Hirst and Azon. He has quality but doesn't look suited to 10. It would also save us having to get another striker in Jan. If that's not an option I'd be tempted to end the loan, tbh.

Sammy Szmodics - not sure. Doesn't seem to fit in our system. A weird purchase.

It would be a shame if we decide to keep persisting with Akpom and Szmods in the 10 just because that was the original plan and we spent money, because it's not worked and we'll lose out a lot more money by not being promoted

10 and a half pretty much describes him, more of a second striker who will track back defensively and will come short to receive it before taking up his striker responsibilities. Just as well he has a big engine. Broadhead, but with more clout and less finesse.

I can't find any quotes but seem to recall it being talked about at Aberdeen or in France, perhaps not with Kieran. Was a noticeable tweak.

I just find with Akpom, he's got all the attributes i love, he's mobile, got good feet etc, but i find him trying to be alongside the striker to often and we lose that third man in midfield which nunez and previously chappers provided.

a niche perspective

Do think there are a few slight evolutions to the McKenna game model this season. I guess partly with a view to being less predictable but maybe also with a view to how we might play if we go back up and this might be a part of that.

I think Akpom has looked good his last 2 games. IMO he should get a run in the 10. Looks very good with back to goal just the final ball has let him down a couple times.

Agree, another who needs games and goals. And will get the former - and then hopefully the latter - after the international break.

Think so, Davis coming inside to the extent where he's taken the ball on the edge of the area with his back to goal is something which was looked at in pre-season last year but didn't really happen in games. Certainly been more noticeable this year. Obviously, the way we play overall is very different this season than last as we have most of the ball in most games this season whereas the opposite was the case last year.

Hear hear let's keep the triangle where possible. I also thought Cajuste made a few good defensive contributions when he came on, perhaps shorter bursts on the pitch liberate him to play with greater intensity.
