Is it a song that most people would know and kick themselves for not getting it? All male band? US/UK? Mainstream or less commercial?
UK, very much less commercial, something I'd have heard on Steve Lamaque's Evening Session and probably disappeared thereafter. Benters is probably closest with Travis, but much less well known than that.

I'm thinking in terms of bands like Mansun, Strangelove, Tindersticks, Auteurs, Gene among lots of others but drawing blanks.

YAY! THAT'S IT! Thanks so much! I vaguely remember the band name now. Don't think anything came of them but that's a lovely song!
I’m glad you got it , as I say like the first minute or so… it’s a frustrating thing … off/on topic how I would have killed for Shazam in my music loving days…the incessant searching I had to do for caught minutes of songs I adored but missed the DJ saying who they were….. porcupine tree was one. Late 90’s was when I began to lose touch of contemporary music so that must have been in that period.

Yeah, particularly as I religiously listened to Steve Lamaq's Evening Session on Radio 1, so I heard a lot of unknown bands that remained unknown around that time. Pre-internet as well, so more of these bands may have survived if they could've got their music out there... and they would've been easier to find as well.
I discovered Oasis on there before they were signed. And probably many of others who have been and gone.
Weird how some of these songs have been stored away in the back of my noggin, yet I can barely remember what I had for lunch a couple of days ago.
