I remember Ken McEwan playing for W.Australia. Arguably the greatest player never to play a Test, so he had a long year to fill. |

That Aussie side we beat in 2010-11 was utterly dreadful.
Really not sure what to expect this series tbh. Got a feeling that in terms of overall quality, it may be quite underwhelming mixed in with the usual frenetic drama you always get with Aus v England.
One thing I really want to see though is a Root hundred to shut some people up. | |

Remains to be seen whether this is the last push from a very good Aussie attack or it’s a summer too far for them.

When you get a golden generation you tend to get a vacuum when they all retire if no younger players have had a chance. I would expect Australia are still strong enough to win this series at home, but with the whole team being above 30, they will be left with a completely inexperienced side in five years time. | |

I hope he gets his ton. Otherwise it will always be held against him when working out order of merit for the top batsmen (I refuse to say batter when the context is men). He will be 38 at the next Ashes and possibly past his best, so he has to make it count during this series. |

I do sort of see Stokes' point about scheduling, especially with the Sheffield Shield ongoing. But the decision to play on a pitch that bears no resemblance to the WACA seems very poor.
What is the stance of the Sheffield Shield towards foreign players? It would have been interesting (assuming the states would play ball) to see a few English players turning out for the state sides, in the same way as Steve Smith did for Sussex in the run-up to the 2023 Ashes series. Just as a point of order - Ashes tests haven't played at the WACA since 2017 - they are at the new(ish) Perth Stadium. Metallica played at the stadium 12-13 days ago so they only put the drop in wicket down last week and it wasn't ready for any practice matches. It will play like most Australian wickets now, they've tried to replicate the freak hardness of the WACA wicket but haven't been able to.
Probably not a bad thing - I've got tickets for Day 3 (Sunday) and I'd rather not watch England being skittled or the Aussies smashing us around the ground like so many WACA test matches in the past. | | | |
