I know what you mean but Villa have 45K season ticket waiting list, apparently.

That's interesting, Villa obviously a vey decent sized club in England's second city with plenty of history. Not sure what their attendances were like in the champ 10 years ago though. Brum have always had a decent loyal following on the road etc but hardly a huge fanbase. Not sure you can just treble the size of your fanbase even with money and success and they have even achieved the latter yet anyway.

| Birmingham’s new stadium revealed shortly on 22:30 - Nov 20 by urbanpenguin | Regardless, I stand by here what I wrote in the other thread a month or so ago when it was announced who the co-designer was: "They don't have deep enough pockets for anything designed by Heatherwick Studio. It's a mad choice, though tempered a bit by the fact they are forced to partner with a firm that actually know what they are doing. I am pretty sure that whatever renders get released for the stadium will not at all look like what it is when finished, and Heatherwick will be quietly dropped in less than a year. As he was at Fulham and at countless projects where clients just want headlines and shiny renders before getting people in who are grown ups." [Post edited 20 Nov 23:01]

Pretty sure money is not an issue for the owners there.

| Birmingham’s new stadium revealed shortly on 20:52 - Nov 20 by ArnieM | It looks absolutely hideous. Reminds me of Battersea power station! |
Battersea Power Station is classy, a design from its time, a decent industrial building. The brum stadium is awful. I'm desperately hoping my fellow planners and design colleagues have a few words if it gets near a planning application

I'm guessing they will continue highlighting Birmingham's heritage once the stadium is finished by having loads of uncollected rubbish strewn around the seating and large rats feasting on rotting food? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The money being invested into that club is amazing considering their position a few seasons back!!! A lot of clubs and fans being critical to me is jealousy. The comments about the towers is an engineering masterpiece to hiding the infrastructure whilst giving a nod to the heritage. Fantastic architecture, its going to be a stadium like the NFL ones where its a business and not just a stand.

Its the way forwards to meet the high demands (financial) of soccer these days More elaborate, unique designs to come. I like the way they the stands are being kept as close as possible too,,,,, no toilet bowl like London Stadium!

The London stadium was not designed for football, it's not a sensible comparison.

I'll admit to being jealous of the scale and ambition. I do think it's a risk though. Such a stadium (if fully utilised) is what sets the big teams apart from the rest in the PL, but could easily turn in to a white elephant if they don't perform on the pitch. People will say you don't need a big stadium to compete in the Premier League because TV money can cover a lot of expenses (Brentford/ Bournemouth/etc...), but if you want to aim higher than survival on a consistent long term basis and challenge the top end every year, then you need to bring in far more money than TV can offer. Take Tottenham (with a similar scale stadium), TV money is less than a 3rd of their income. Not a guarantee of success because Spurs always have the ability to be Spursy like last year. However they, much like Forest, are reverting to mean this year. HOWEVER..... Architecturally it looks absolutely crap and no-one can convince me otherwise. It's a caricature of a football stadium and a brickworks that looks like it was generated by AI. The scale of the chimneys is comical and will in all probability be massively scaled down, but underneath that, it is just a bog standard soulless bowl.

A building doesn’t have a soul - the excitement, the history and the atmosphere is what makes a building special. The old Wembley was a soulless bowl but people were fond of that.

Soccer is a British word first used in the mid to late nineteenth century for what we now call Association Football. But soccer is still used all over the world. [Post edited 21 Nov 11:55]

I don’t do jealousy so their scale and ambition is their affair. Strange design proposal too. However, I find what they are trying to do interesting in that it doesn’t make huge amount of sense to me. Need to read more about it. You have a large city like that with one club dominant in size and fanbase (Villa) and a number of others pretty much peers but a rung down. WBA, Birmingham, Wolves the latter not far away. Plenty of other clubs around too - Cov, Leicester, Stoke the other side and a few smaller ones. The population is about 1.2 million. Where is it going to steal support from to fill a 62000 stadium? I get that it will be multi purpose and thanks to Tom Brady, they may even get an NFL game. Conferencing and other uses? Possibly as it’s the centre of the country but Birmingham already has a lot of that so it’ll be competing. The way it was announced, feels a bit brash and disjointed. With ITFCs somewhat more limited and measured ambitions, I can see what the owners are trying to do and how it might fit the town and county. I also get the impression it’ll be realistically scaled for this size of club. Do I just lack the imagination and ambition that BCFC are showing or are we doing it the right way? Just thoughts and questions.

Architecture is more than just the utility of the building and of course it still factors in to what makes a building special. It's Ice Hockey, but here are 2 near enough identical size arenas. Would you really not describe one as having more soul, even without any people or possibly any knowledge of the history or atmosphere?

One looks like a right dump and the other looks modern and fresh. Not sure why dilapidated stadiums are glorified.

I don't think it's lack of ambition, but difference in ambition. We clearly aren't aiming to upend football and become a super club. We want to be a decent sized Premier League club I feel, but I don't think we have ambitions of breaking into the big 6. I think that's reasonable. The financial clout required to break the big 6 means having an income I don't think Ipswich/Suffolk could ever support. Could we sell out 60k every week at higher prices than we do now and also rake in hundreds of millions on commercial deals? I doubt it. Birmingham and their owners are betting the house that they can do that. No-one invests £3bn to just do alright. I think they have advantages demographically, but also a lot of other clubs to climb over to reach the top of the pile in the West Midlands. However City were in the shadow of United for decades and are fighting that battle. I'm curious to see how Everton get on in the medium term. Their new stadium could see them push Liverpool harder. I think it's a case of different ways, rather than a right or wrong. Only thing I see is that Birmingham's way is riskier because it's very much a build a stadium for the team you want to become (big club challenging the Hexarchy in the PL) versus building for what they are (a newly promoted Championship side with ambitions).
| Birmingham’s new stadium revealed shortly on 16:01 - Nov 21 with 100 views | grow_our_own | "Birmingham design is batsh!t and hilarious" - I quite like it. Most new stadia in recent decades have been built: 1. Too far from the pitch 2. with tiered, not single-kop ends 3. with shallow gradients This maxes the gradients/steepness of stands, gets as close to the pitch as FIFA's stupid advertising-hoard centric regs allow, and doesn't separate ultras into two separate tiers of end-stands. Thus atmosphere and fans' sense of involvement are maximised. [Post edited 21 Nov 17:48]
