Well, it certainly looks an ambitious project at an estimated cost of £3bn and should it happen it will bring jobs and £ into the area - and let’s face it, a dump like Birmingham needs all the help it can get.
The design looks very odd to me, but at least it’s different. What I don’t quite understand is the capacity of 62k which looks well beyond what they need - though if they’re going to host NFL, I suppose they’ll need it for that.

They’re rather noisy and brash about what they’re doing but fair play for giving it a go. Of course, I’d like to see them start life in the new stadium in league one just for the bantz. | |

"well beyond what they need" - well beyond their current crowds. Weren't filling their ~29k stadium until last season. South + east Birmingham is ~500k. By comparison, there's little else but ITFC in Suffolk and North Essex, which has significantly higher population. ~1m people, and growing faster than Brum. |  | | |

Just seen the plans for their new stadium - reminds of when someone builds quite an impressive Lego building and then their kids adds to it by sticking random bricks on its roof.
On a more serious note - it’s going to cost £2billion so how on earth are they going to finance it if they aren’t in the PL by completion date (2029)? Let alone fill it.
I guess the population of their catchment area makes it possible that they could fill it. Regardless, have to admire their ambition but not necessarily their common sense. |  | | |

Before thoughts, I need to declare some interests here - I am an architecture critic, teach architecture, and have a long history of public beef with Thomas Heatherwick having helped stop on of the designer's most prominent projects.
That out of the way, the Birmingham design is batsh!t and hilarious, chatgpt could design a more nuanced, sensitive, and meaningful design. Those weird, bloated, meaningless chimneys that somehow seem to work to both trigger nostalgia and also hold up the roof are just some of the worst things I've seen in my job
I recently went up to Everton to review the new stadium for a magazine and my main takeaway was how trite the chap juxtaposition of "sci-fi blob" with "bad pretend brick warehouse" tries to somehow speak to the past and future and fail badly, but this is that on acid. [Post edited 20 Nov 23:00]

Regardless, I stand by here what I wrote in the other thread a month or so ago when it was announced who the co-designer was:
"They don't have deep enough pockets for anything designed by Heatherwick Studio. It's a mad choice, though tempered a bit by the fact they are forced to partner with a firm that actually know what they are doing.
I am pretty sure that whatever renders get released for the stadium will not at all look like what it is when finished, and Heatherwick will be quietly dropped in less than a year. As he was at Fulham and at countless projects where clients just want headlines and shiny renders before getting people in who are grown ups." [Post edited 20 Nov 23:01]
