We win that game comfortably with a vaguely effective number 10 on the pitch 18:16 - Nov 22 with 3301 viewsDubtractor

Akpom had an absolute stinker today, poor touch, running/turning into traffic repeatedly, making the wrong decision on shooting or passing, just a really poor game.

Nunez came on and looked busy, but ultimately achieved nothing.

That position is so important in linking our play together in the final third, but if it's not working then we're really easily blunted.

We are going to see many more games like that at PR this season, where teams don't even try and attack, so we need to solve the number 10 or we are going to be frustrated a few more times too.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

If you'd been supporting Ipswich in recent years rather than Leicester you'd know we used to play Conor Chaplin as a second striker in the 10 role. He scored 40+ goals in 2 seasons in that position for us.

Clueless. If you actually knew anything about football you'd realise that the number 10 role is much more than putting the ball in the net. Otherwise you'd just play 2 up front. Chaplin offers and offered so much more than goal scoring.

He did offer more than goals but he wasn't exactly a playmaker, he spent a lot of time in and around the box as well as sometimes dropping deeper. Szmodics has spent most of his career as a 10, he's just not very good. Akpom has played everywhere across the front and has played a lot as a 10. When Chaplin joined us (back when you still supported Leicester) he'd mainly played as a striker before we signed him, it took him a good year or more to really settle into our 10 role and that was at League 1 level. Thankfully our fans are more patient than Leicester fans and gave him time to come good.

I keep seeing about the team growing, we are 1/3 of the way through, and we still look so disjointed, and even more of a concern it’s after 2 weeks of them working for things in training.

We absolute need a striker with pace, someone to play on the shoulder of the last man, someone to actually worry the defence, give them something to think about.

Predictable and boring at present

That's a big gripe of mine and it is addressable

Burns is coming back from an ACL, I hope he does retain that pace but it's not a guarantee, obviously was meant to be rapid but definitely wasn't quite back to it when we loaned him out

We clearly don't think he is any where near ready but Mendel-Idowu looks like he has it, it will be interesting to see if he comes through

No clue if he is available or even fit but he isn't featuring for Sunderland, I'd look at loaning Mayenda if they were willing to let him out

As for pacey strikers, I have no idea who is out there, obviously we looked at Latte Lath last season albeit very last minute

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Shame that vaguely effective #10 has been farmed out to Pompey though, isn't it...meanwhile McKenna tries to shoehorn just about every forward he brings to the club , into that #10 role ( Omari, Szmodics, Akpom). What is the natter with the man??

You like to blame everyone else but you've repeatedly said you'll be less negative and yet here we are every match with you being consistently negative.

You deserve all the pushback that you complain about recieving.

Of McKenna's going yo pksy him, he needs to play him in hus correct position. He's a striker, not a #10

Catch that herbivore!

He literally won the golden boot playing number 10 for be Boro.

It's not working here but it's clearly his position.

Szmodics and Akpom have both played a lot of football in their careers as number 10s. Playing them there isn't shoehorning them in. It's not working but I don't think that means there's something massively wrong with McKenna for trying to play them in a position they've played in often.

There’s a difference between a number 10 and a second strike system though.

Akpom isn’t a nit it together quick release type number 10. He scored loads of goals in the box behind or often in front of Archer for Boro. With what we currently have, Szmodics is probably our best bet but he still isn’t the kind of link up player to get it to the wide players on the counter type number 10 that thrived under McKenna before. He's more a run off the should have the 9 in behind for goals himself.

That’s a lot of numbers.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

It wasn’t a great idea starting with Azon either imo. He looked completely lost in a crowded box up against their CBs. But it’s clear to see KM’s trying to use the squad and just maybe that’ll start to pay off as the season goes on and teams start to tire (maybe).

Akpom was a 1 or 2 out of 10 today. Horrible.

Kieran either needs to change system, or personnel. But he won't do either. It's so frustrating.

Which in my view means that Kieran was a 1 or 2 out of 10 today.

But he seems to get a free pass. I'm not 'McKenna out' by any stretch, but he is underachieving just like many of our players are.

I've written this season off, it's obvious KM cannot create a team that plays with speed and imagination. What is also obvious is that the board will not do anything this season so we are stuck with this turgid football for the 25/26 season.

The Southampton board recognised they had an issue that needed to be fixed and acted. Meanwhile the Town board has it's head firmly stuck in the sand.

Well, this has aged well.
