| The favourite car you ever owned 22:05 - Nov 30 with 1191 views | Churchman | In tribute to a couple of posters I’ve swapped posts with, what’s your favourite? Not the best, most reliable, suitable, most flash, no rationale. Purely most important no reason, no judgement. The one that in your head you say ‘I wish I still had it’. I’ll go first. My thread, prerogative. A late 1985 three door Toyota Corolla GT. not the coupe version. The boring hatchback one. Soooo dull. Red with black trim. Unassuming, quiet. Sunroof, cassette player, grey mouse fur interior. Big alloy wheels as standard, no power steering, nothing much at all really. Zzzz. But open the bonnet and omg there it was. A twin cam dogs gonads engine held by strengthening bars. Hear it run, touch the throttle, but do it kindly. It was a work of art. It went like nothing else of its peers. Going round corners? Bit of a problem. But I adored how well engineered it was and how I could literally hit the floor with it in a way I can’t do now in my current car and it’d say to me ‘yeah, more please’. Yet in the back the shopping, luggage, clubs went. Kindly Aunt one day, total monster the next. Loved it. Ok, I’ve had a few beers and upbeat reminiscing, but for those who are interested in cars, even vaguely, which is the one? [Post edited 30 Nov 22:09]

Now there was a car! My dad’s three series wore through the seats in 18 months and the engine boiled itself when it was out of warranty. Ate starter motors, brakes, water pumps, you name it. But he adored that car and if he was with us now, it’d be his choice. And I have to say, it was a heck of a car.

I’ve had a ponder, and no.

Ok, fair enough. Last try. What if I was to line up the XK8 and the Capri (great cars btw) and say right, both are going to the crusher, but you can save one. Which would it be?

You could have invented a new game there. "Keep one, sell one, crush one"

| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Caused me no end of grief but still miss it and was gutted to discover fairly recently that it bit the dust in the mid nineties. I had hoped it might end up being a ‘barn find’ and we could be reunited!
| The favourite car you ever owned on 08:12 - Dec 1 with 211 views | GavTWTD | When I made some money when in a proper job I bought a red Nissan 100NX. Targa top so you could take the roof off in nice weather. Really light so it was quite nippy. Really loved that car. When it's days were done I bought a further 2 more. Extremely reliable car. I didn't like the headlamps and they seemed prone to getting smashed. There's a blue one still going near me and I made a point of trying to talk to the owner. He said his other car is a porsche but he gets far more interest in the NX. Stopped making them in 1995. | |

It’d be the Capri. But I would always regret it. It’s probably better as a memory.

| The favourite car you ever owned on 09:41 - Dec 1 with 157 views | DJR | Not being one who has owned or had the desire for a flash car, I'd probably opt for the first car I bought at the age of 27: living in London meant little need for a car and I put buying a home ahead of buying a car. It was a brand new standard red Ford Fiesta, and what it enabled me to do was to get out of London at weekends and get back to Ipswich without taking the train. EDIT: As an aside my next car was a "special edition" Vauxhall Nova. It had a basic engine but was souped up to look sporty, with sporty wheels. Indeed the car could probably be summed up by the fact that when parked outside my house one night, it had its four wheels stolen, with the car itself left behind propped up on the driveway. Good choice. And yes, the memory is always better than how it actually was. Bit like days gone by football wise. | | | |

Eventually branched out into the “performance arm of Fiat” and got a used Abarth 500. Loved it so much I three years later factory ordered one to the spec below: Absolutely loved the thing. I actually saw it for sale recently and it still only had like 45k on it. Nippy, reliable and fun…a sprog showed up though and the wife didn’t think it was an appropriate car for a father.

Nah, the TH is just a sentimental hark back to a golden year when I was truly happy, Fav has to be that county model Defender90.

Shame I was living in Guernsey, with a speed limit of 35mph... but it did love the French autoroutes. Driving round the Arc De Triomphe was easy - the Parisiens do appreciate a decent motor, so they politely gave me room to negotiate that usually challenging junction. [I last tried it in a Mondeo, and it was an absolute nightmare of clashing make egos!].
| The favourite car you ever owned on 11:11 - Dec 1 with 80 views | FBI | 1983 Land Rover 110 2.25 petrol van: absolutely the ultimate configuration for 14 MPG on a good day, going downhill and assuming it would start in the first place which was about 3 times out of 10, right up to the point where it blew a head gasket in the Lake District on a drive up from home in North Devon. Ex-Royal Navy and it still had chequer plate all over, front and back bars, MOD fire extinguisher, massive roof box etc. Oh, and still in camo paint scheme. I was a local hero when I used it to pick up FBI Jr from cubs and had to run an informal evening taxi service for overexcited small boys (and the occasional dad) hanging out of the windows and yelling "takatakataka!" at passing Luftwaffe aircraft thinly disguised as buses. We called it Cockzilla. | |

I thought I'd add to this rather than edit. Found a site that tells you how many cars there are of this type still left on the road. Given there are about 70 NXs on the road its kinda remarkable there's one near me. https://www.howmanyleft.co.uk/?q=nissan+100nx Thought someone might find the link interesting.

| The favourite car you ever owned on 11:48 - Dec 1 with 0 views | mellowblue | my yellow Alfa GTV 3.0. Kept it for 11 years, should never have got rid of it, but local garages did not have the know how too keep it tip-top. Ended up trying to recapture that experience by buying a red one uprated with a 3.2 engine, but in truth it drives like a 25 year old car (which is what it is). Lesson learned, you can never recapture a period in your life. Just sits in the garage getting dusty. Maybe, one day it will be considered a classic and the price might go up. | | | |
