A three-door Suzuki Ignis:
Bought it the day I passed my driving test, as I was desperate to get off my moped. Bought it after dark, from a chap flipping cars from his home address. The 'test drive' was being allowed to accompany him in the passenger seat as he took it on a sedate drive around residential streets.
I'm amazed that I got the nine months out of it that I did! Ended up selling it for what I paid for it (£500...) and 'upgraded' to this:
One careful (now 90-year-old) owner from new, and only 25,000 miles on the clock. |  |

Purchased privately from a guy in Sproughton. £200 quid cash.
Not the flashiest car but had electric windows (which in 1982 I'm guessing wasn't all that common?)
Reliable enough but certainly needed that choke on first start in the morning. [Post edited 1 Dec 10:11]

A maroon 850 mini, 1965, GLF235C.
Paid £150 when I got it in Feb 1975.
Took the cylinder head off and re-seated the valves more times than I care to remember, trying to get a bit more power out of it. Strobe timing light, 4 degrees before top dead centre and all that. Simpler times.
Sold it to a mate after about 18 months and, a year after that, a wheel came off. Apparently it was my fault. |  |

I think mine was a clapped out red Vauxhall Chevette estate. Totally rubbish car with acceleration on par with a 2CV, but good to learn to drive in. Had a fantastically small turning circle. Got told off by my firm's transport manager after I broke a couple of springs rallying it around a field. Wondered why it was driving funny on the way to work that day ! I had one of those as my second car, Daytona Yellow - looked awful but drove OK, perhaps mine was a 1.6. Paid £450 for it. A step up from the £200 I paid for my first, a Morris 1300 which I managed to keep going for a couple of years. |  |

My Escort was a 1974 Mk1 1300XL in metallic brown and beige interior. Class. The choke had to be fully out to start then gently released as it warmed up.
It was a three door and the back windows used to drop out. They were held in by two lugs and a single handle thing glued to the glass. The adhesive failed and in the road and path they went. Glassbond solve the problem. The cardboard windows I made as a temporary fix certainly didn’t.
Great engine and gearbox on it though and it handled well. | | | |

1981 silver Renault 5 after university, which had been my brother's and then my mother's.
Head gasket blew on a Saturday afternoon in 1993 on the M4 near Swindon on the way to my girlfriend's (at the time, now my wife of 26 years). Had it towed to a retail park on the outskirts of Swindon, parked up and continued my journey to Gloucestershire by train. Newcastle United has been away at Swindon that day and the train was chock full of unhappy Geordies as they'd thrown away a 2-0 lead.
I spent some time the following week phoning scrap yards in the Swindon area to see if they had an engine to drop in. Found one and went back the next weekend to see if the car would make it across Swindon from the retail park to the scrap yard. Decided to go through the town rather than back onto the M4 for two junctions. That meant going round the Swindon 'magic roundabout' with all sorts of smoke/steam coming out from under the bonnet. I got it to the scrapyard and the replacement engine did me fine for another couple of years.
I also tested the patience of an MOT tester when he failed it due to one of the headlights pointing in the wrong direction after the front of the car had had a nudge against a wall and it took me about four attempts to get the light pointing more or less correctly. |  | | |

I bought my first car in 1979. It was a 1976 Escort MK2 1100 Popular Plus - the Plus meant it had carpets and a parcel shelf! Just about managed to reach 70mph going downhill with a following wind. Mind you, I had it 6 years so it owed me little by the time I traded it in for an XR3i in 1985. [Post edited 1 Dec 17:18]
