It's less the individuals as the imbalance of the squad: four right backs, no direct cover for Matusiwa or Leif, no working option at 10 and a striker short for the fourth season in a row. |
Are we short of a striker ? The numbers are there it's just that out of five forward playing players they have only three goals between them,
It's sad really but my opinion is we should explore the idea that Azon goes back to his club in January even if it costs a couple of million so that we can open up a place to bring someone in. |  | | |

It’s bad recruitment
What player fits in with the mould of what was stated we needed when bullied like little school boys against Newcastle. Pace and physicality. Apart from hirst not one of our midfield or strikers is above 6ft. Not one of our midfielders or strikers has get past your defender pace.
We have a few that can take on the man and get a few yards from them due their technical ability but beyond that we have recruited a team of mid to high technical players with average pace. We can’t break the lines and we can’t get in behind teams like we used to so will have to rely on battling it out, slogging it out and hope that our possession game gets us enough opportunities to put one away which is proving hard at the moment due to how we lack a clinical cutting edge for what ever reason [Post edited 3 Dec 23:56]

He was far more productive with us than any other team he’s played for (bar one season for Barnsley that was close to his season in 23/24). Obviously he has to take the chances, but it was the understanding in the team that made it possible. He’d be poor in this team.
It’s all well and good cherry picking top talent, but if we can’t mould them together into a unit we may as well have saved our money. It’s obviously better to have ‘lesser’ players working together than the Harlem Globe Trotters of the Championship working by themselves. |  |

Broadhead provided a genuinely different option too. Burns would know when to take on a man during the back to back and when to play it back.
Clarke just runs at people until he gets shrugged off the ball. Which is about 12 times a game. | |

Agree entirely with the OP, it's not down to the recruitment, it's down to tactics and coaching. Rotation, rotation rotation, square pegs in round holes, the way we have completely nullified Leif Davis as the assist king is a prime example of poor tactics. |
I think the Leif Davis situation was more to do with when he bombed forward and the ball was lost it left a gaping hole down that side so it was decided to tuck him in more. But as you say his main attributes have been nullified to a certain extent.
I think it's more to do with other players filling in when he goes forward. It's up to the forward line to attack balls in the box and that is somewhere we have been lacking. Why I don't know, but when you have players who were all top scorers in the Championship and only one goal between them and five forwards in total with three goals between them it's either the creative side of the team or these players just aren't good enough.
I suggest Azon be returned to his club. I don't know what sort of contract/deal he is on. I know there's a right to buy, but to me that's totally out the window. | | | |

Or keep hold of the previous one. Rather than letting him go for free when he was still under contract. McKenna placed a bet that he would be able to improve on all of the players he let go. At the moment it's rather looking like he lost that bet. But I guess time will tell. |  | | |

Having right backs sat in the stand doesn’t affect performances.
Having Leif play every minute doesn’t either. He’s always done that.
And you can’t have us short at 10 and striker; Akpom is one or the other.

Think aside from anything else it probably makes us realise that in the two promotion seasons ITFC/McKenna maybe just got a bit lucky to have great partnerships appearing all over the pitch - Morsy/Luongo, Davis/Broadhead, Chaplin/Burns, Woolfenden/Burgess etc
At the time, I thought McKenna was a footballing genius, but now it seems like he didn't really know why these partnerships worked or have any idea how to build new ones. |  | | |

One thing that miffs me more than mirths me: for all the superbly generous if somewhat misplaced investing, our best 9 is Steve Clarke's 4th. Yes Scotland made the World Cup, noted. But so did Curacao. So may Wales.
Is it as simple as Steve seeing a bit of himself in Dykes' shiny head? Is it Scottish bias rearing its ugly head? Hirst is a great pro who I'm glad is with us. Azón is a trier who often finds the right spaces if rarely the right connection. Will we go again in Jan do we think? Is the money well bottomless?

Yes. It’s quite the anomaly that, for all that we’ve spent about £150m, currently our best CF costs less than £2m.
Every other position bar LB has greater investment in this squad. | |
