Absolutely no need for that.

I don’t think they’re alone! And we could always rise above that level irrespective of what some of their fans may think. Just a thought.

Do you think the world is a better place for that comment? The fact is that, apart from the bigger Premier League clubs and Rangers and Celtic in Scotland, the fans of most football teams are in much the same boat, with trophies unlikely and relegation at some stage never to be ruled out. Indeed, to be so dismissive of a club with more history than ours, and whose demise would rock the community, is not really a good look. As it is, I've donated £20 to them.

I do wonder what the origins of the name are.

All traditional football clubs are worth saving. If our owners decide they’re taking their money elsewhere and the club falls under financial threat, will you be turning down a donation from a Hamilton supporter? Thought not.

Maybe named after a school (?Hamilton Academy?), given many schools in Scotland are .**** Academy. My dad went to Ardrossan Academy. The rugby team named after them was also known as the Accies. EDIT: I was right. This from Wikipedia. They were established in 1874 from the school football team at Hamilton Academy and remain the only professional club in British football to have originated from a school team. You mean Scottish schools have been academies for over a century. Or are you trolling me with them academising in the same way as English schools did?

My understanding is that Academies in Scotland were equivalent to grammar schools in England, and had nothing to do with the much more recent developments in England. EDIT: I came across this on webpage posing the question. These days I think most such schools (unless private) are comprehensive but they will have maintained "Academy" in their name. "It's historical. A lot of them used to be state funded selective schools. A bit like English grammar schools." [Post edited 5 Dec 21:17]

Bollix. They might not like the national side and its fans ( I don't ) but I've been watching Scottish football for years and have had nothing but a great time with good people wherever I've been.

Whilst the negative feelings towards her are pretty ripe, the positive memories of the town, the people and the club outweigh that tenfold. Donated.

I'm sure Old Etonians, FA Cup winners in 1882, would have given the Accies a right royal stuffing.

How many Scottish football fans do you know that hate Ipswich Town? I've just returned from a long weekend in Aberdeenshire and despite chatting with supporters of Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs and both Old Firm clubs, not one person said they hate Ipswich, or any other English club. At national level, England and Scotland is the oldest rivalry in football, and as such, there is historical dislike on both sides of the border.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. It was Scotland, and in particular Queen's Park, who invented the passing game. Indeed, this led to Scotland winning 9 of the first 12 internationals, even though England (with their emphasis on dribbling) had bigger and stronger players. This from Wikipedia. "Queen's Park are accredited with introducing a collective and 'scientific' form of team based passing which would become known as 'combination' football.[29] Although rudimentary forms of passing existed prior to 1872, and Queen's themselves appear to have indulged in this, the combination game as a systematic form of passing was being played by the club at the time of the first official international match between Scotland and England. This changed the nature of the Association game as the culture in London at this time was largely one of dribbling and 'backing up'. Scotland's promotion of the combination game would ultimately lead to the introduction of professionalism in England in 1885, due to the large importation of Scottish players (known as Scotch Professors) into the midlands and the north of England."
