I sometimes wonder when I'll wake up after falling off the scaffolding 'stand' at Gillingham for KMs first game in charge. Must confess I woke up on Sunday bizarrely more frustrated and annoyed by the defeat than I was at Preston, Oxford, Charlton etc so many apologies to all for my grumpiness.
I am normally very good at keeping a sense of perspective.
Couldn’t really put my finger on why I was so miffed to be honest. Maybe the dreadful journey home, illness I can’t shake or just the general vibe of the people around me who moaned non-stop for 85 minutes and then launched into a tirade at the players after the final whistle.
Football is emotional and we were awful. It is very rare for so many players to produce bad performances all in the same game but, wonder goals aside, I didn’t think Leicester were that good.
But maybe that’s the most frustrating thing about us this season.
This Championship is nowhere near as good as last year’s or the year before. It’s there for the taking and we seem to be floundering rather than flourishing.
But I’ve watched Ipswich since the early 80s, so I am well aware it’s generally the hope that kills you.
I’m also big enough and sadly old enough to laugh at myself.
In the cold light of day, Saturday’s result, in isolation, was a setback, nothing more. Yes, there are underlying issues in the squad but there is also plenty of time to resolve them.
And as someone rightly posted in the week, it’s about time we had a trip to Wembley. Like I say, it’s the hope that kills you.
