I find this the most worrying thing about his 2nd term, even more than the first time around I think they have realised he can kind of say or do anything and you don't have to apologise or backtrack as there is no consequence to anything. The first time I really noticed this was the Pete Hegseth Signal messaging fiasco where he invited in the journalist, your normal playbook there is someone takes the blame, resigns, and people move on; this time around though they have realised you can just not do any of that and move on regardless.

I don’t see how they defamed him, so it should be quickly dismissed. There’s overwhelming evidence he encouraged the insurrection and was going to be facing charges before his reelection and subsequent abuse of power to get the charges dropped. He could have got them for lax editorial standards (or at least the production company who produced the documentary). But defamation, no.
Mind you, he’ll chuck endless cash at lawyers and anything could happen. Plus the BBC will have to spend a lot of public money defending the claim. Whatever the outcome it’ll be expensive. The bloke’s a monster and a menace and it’ll be one hell of a party when he’s gone lol. | |

Well said and an notable reminder that in our political systems those who vote for individuals can vehemently disagree with a lot about them. On the left, there are many who will still support and vote for Labour but have real problems with what Starmer does on many issues. The BBC programme misrepresented the words by their edit. I think they could possibly defend the case on two grounds - that other things he said did give the same meaning (if they can find clear evidence of that) or that there is no defamation/misrepresentation of character (if they can show that). But I am no legal expert. I also suspect this is a case being held in a US state with no legal authority in the UK so will be an embarrassing technicality rather than a costly case. (Again I am no expert, though, so do not know.) | |

Ironically that is the immense harm of enabling the election of repeated Conservative governments, Brexit, and the rise of anti-immigration and Reform. Most of which Truss is or did very much advocate for and is far from a left-leaning bias.
The truth is that the BBC runs a lot of content that could be seen as left-leaning and a lot that is very clearly right-leaning. Much of that which leans right is dedicated political coverage. The Panorama coverage is the exception rather than the rule. | |

I firmly believe Trump was inciting insurrection and should have been indicted for it. However, that Panorama edit is indefensible. I also think it is bad that the BBC are facing legal action over it. The publicity received is playing into Trump's hands I am sure. | |

Indeed, and one aspect that is alien to us is the political parties do not have the formal leadership or membership structures that ours do. Anyone can rock up and say "I'm running as a Republican/Democrat" and if they get sufficient support they have a shot. There's no central party control.
In the case of Trump he's neither a true conservative or a Republican in the traditional sense, but he's captured so much of the public that the establishment got in line, with those that opposed him from within (Mitt Romney for example an early critic, those in the Bush, Cheney, McCain camps) all finding themselves quickly marginalised and with no formal mechanism to challenge beyond standing themselves, at great expense, politically and financially.
For both the Reps and Dems the primary system makes it easy for fringe candidates to build a head of steam and for moderates to find themselves shut out long before they can get to the convention stage. | |
