No, I'm not thrilled about it, but I'm trying to be impartial. I wonder if Akpom will stay, not sure there. A left back as cover for Davis looks likely. And...I still have a sneaking suspicion we'll go after Josh Sargent from Naadge! I see a big signing coming in as well.

There might be a few surprises Sam is a maybe i do wonder if they will look for a 3rd keeper whos young to free up a space in the squad as well. Feels like the most important window that the club has had a long time which will shape the short term future for the club. Fail and we go down the pecking order parachute payment wise with the clubs coming down and further sales. Sargent, no chance.

We can speculate all we like but achieving our objectives is the only thing that matters. Not sure if we moved on all the players you list that we would meet the league requirements concerning player development. Don’t we have to have a players un the 25 man squad who was a product of our Academy? There may also be a temptation to keep Baggott & Humphries because of their involvement in the U21 set up.

I really have no idea what our plan with Baggott and Humphreys, is. Feels a bit odd to me. In Baggott you’ve got someone who’s 23, had his fair share of loans where he’s had injuries/never really ripped it up anywhere and yet still keeps getting new deals here, when IMHO, he’s never going to be a regular here. Same goes for Humphreys as well. 22, with his last meaningful contribution in a Town shirt was 3 years ago. Had a good loan spell last year and to be honest, I was surprised we didn’t try sell him whilst his stock was high. [Post edited 23 Dec 9:54]

I suppose both are decent players, very well versed in the way we play, not expensive and able to step in if we had an injury crisis. Is there any home-grown type ruling that makes either valuable to us particularly too? Not brilliant for their careers at this stage, necessarily, but a thorough schooling in The KMc Way could be seen as a decent point on a CV>

As I've said before, the lack of a League Cup run has skewed our perceptions of Humphreys' season so far. Games he would undoubtedly have played in. matches where he might have shone sufficiently to force his way into First Team contention. He's also been important cover at Left Back (with Townsend out) and, to an extent, in Central Midfield. As it happens, Kipre has done well, meaning we can use the more experienced Greaves out wide on the couple of occasions Davis has been out and Taylor has come good in CM. However, Humphreys is still not surplus, as now we have the FA Cup coming up, more games where the likes of he and Baggott are likely to get time which we don't want to lay on our League starters.

January first chance to shuffle the pack, you’d imagine those vulnerable are B.Johnson, H.Clarke, Burns, Baggott, Humphreys. You’d have thought in terms of incomings, a number 9 and 10 look top priority, and possibly support Matusiwa as well. [Post edited 23 Dec 11:48]

I really don't think it's possible to create a genuine Prem-ready squad in the Championship. The gap is just too big and it's not possible to attract that quality of player to the second tier, even if you could afford to (let alone staying within financial rules). Sunderland hired in most of a new squad in the summer, spending £150m+. Of the players who made 15+ appearances in their promotion season, just four have made more than 10 in the Prem (Hume 15 starts + 2 sub, Isidor 11+6, Ballard 12+3, La Fee 14+2). Mayenda is on 3+5 (only starting early in the season), Rigg is on 4+3, four others have half a dozen sub appearances between them. Far more change than we made last season.

I'm sure there is a deal to be done with Johnson if someone serious comes in for him. We might well end up paying some proportion of his wages for the remainder of his contract to smooth things over.

Johnson will stay as a useful squad player, given his versatility. Is Harry Clarke ever fit ? If he is I reckon he will go out on loan to get game time or we might give him a free. Burns had a lively 76 minutes for the U21s so if he can get fit, I think we will keep him. Humphreys in only under contract until the summer & he's having a wasted year. Baggott is under contract until 2028 and again, he's wasting his time here. Another fit striker is a priority. I think we're stuck with Akpom for the season.
