I got it a little wrong. It seems the club would have demanded a fee from another championship Club whereas he would be allowed to go for free overseas.

There's a few things that don't add up about the whole situation.
The fact that he apparently wanted a deal longer than June 2026 and would seek a fee to sell him domestically but said we would allow him to go abroad for free seemed to be a gentleman's agreement based on the service that he had given to us.
The fact he barely lasted five minutes in Kuwait before his contract was tore up and then he signed for a divisional rival on a free, which we otherwise would have got a fee for if he went directly there, does seem very co-incidental timing, that is for sure. I'm not saying that this was Sam's intention, just that it is what has happened.
Also strange is him agreeing a deal there until the end of the season, considering the fact that it was widely reported that he left us because he wanted a longer deal. As we know when Sam was leaving it was not he cleanest of exits and he was training alone and it did drag out a bit and it makes you wonder if things didn't end as well as they could have.
The club and McKenna have been in touch with him a lot though and I can't see that being the case if things were so bad between him and the club. From what KM's been saying Sam has been in regular contact, maybe with Ashton too either directly or indirectly. Knowing the situation I wouldn't be surprised if he got their blessing, regardless of any agreement originally. |  |

I don't think there is any big conspiracy. Kuwait didn't work out and he was left without a club for half a season. That wasn't to avoid another club having to pay a fee. |
I'm not saying that there is any either to be honest, just that the whole series of events are just probably nothing more than a co-incidence but you can see why some people might think it looks a little odd. | |

I guess as he already was on a contract here until the end of this season, Town thought they didnt want to offer anything beyond that until they knew if we would be in the PL or Championship - sensible from the club.
Sam isn't PL level now his legs won't last it, so I guess when we get promotion this season we would have said Thanks and bye and as his contract had ended he would have gone for free.
Sam had offers including the Kuwait one, he decided to take that offer and not stay here until the end of the season. As a thank you the club let him leave for free.
But it didn't work out in Kuwait, I'm guessing he agreed to rip up his contract and thus he isnt on a wage now and therefore happy to get any contract until the end of the season.
It happens, I really doubt he moved his family to Kuwait to simply avoid a transfer fee. Honestly even if we had received a fee for Sam it wasnt going to be in the 10s of millions. |  | | |

I believe as he has not been absent from the UK for a full tax year, he will also have a stonking tax bill from HMRC. Maybe Bristol have agreed to cover this.

I think it is really nice that Bristol are visiting us later this month. Obviously once the game gets started I hope he has a terrible game if selected and we beat them heavily, but it never felt right to me that after the role he played in our rise up from League One that he didn't get any send off or chance for the fans to show their appreciation to him; I am not suggesting there should be anything over the top from us, but I am sure he will get a good reception when his name is called out and I think that will be a nice moment. | | | |
