Malta…Where To Stay. 16:25 - Jan 8 with 1390 viewsStochesStotasBlewe

Booked flights to the aforementioned island for the middle of May for a week.Haven’t been there for over 40 years so I imagine it’s changed somewhat. Not fussed about in your face nightlife, just a nice laid back vibe with some good restaurants and bars and easy access to (what I hope is still the case) the excellent public transport. Preferably, we would like to rent a studio/apartment so if any one has any suggestions on cities/resorts, would be most grateful for any pointers. TIA.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Had a wonderful week there last summer, highly recommend.

We stayed up in the north of the island , Mellihia Bay (DB Seabanks), and there were some lovely bay side restaurants and bars all in walking distance. St Paul's Bay, which is slightly closer to the airport, offers much more of the same.

Valletta, the capital is worth a long weekend alone and the street side dining plus bars make it an excellent place to visit when mixed with all the historical landmarks.

Going in March and staying in Sliema. Quick ferry across from Valletta and it's meant to be nice at night to eat and drink on the waterfront and see the lights of Valletta across the bay.

We'll see if made a good choice or not.

There are loads of buses. Also use the Bolt app for getting around, rather than Uber, there are a lot more taxis on Bolt.

If you want to see what the rest of Malta used to be like, get a boat across to Gozo - there are tours through the blue lagoon etc. The San Anton gardens are really nice, and Mdina is an absolute must.

There aren't many sandy beaches, Mellieha/Marea is probably the best.

Stayed in Marsaskala in the south east just over a year ago. Had an apartment with harbour views. Plenty of restaurants/bars for a week there. Busy round the harbour front on an evening but not overwhelming. Buses were excellent; used them for trips to Valleta and Mdina.

I stayed there nice hotel beach is poor though climbing over rocks to get in and out.
Drinks were watered down I drank vodka all day at the rooftop infinity pool and was sober as a judge better at the elvis or Irish bar in the evening proper drinks.

I second that recommendation for Mellihia Bay. We stayed at the Melihia Bay Hotel a few years back. Great hotel, super chilled, beautiful views, close to some great old historical buildings, and easy access to Valleta by bus.

Have a great trip!

Agree on the beach. Only one with any sand anywhere was a few miles away (and small) or a boat ride to Gozo.

Not sure on the drinks, we had all inclusive plus and basically had our own cocktail bar/waiter for two weeks.

Nine lives was a really fancy cocktail bar and restaurant. Used Bolt to taxi everywhere, worth re-checking after a few minutes if the fare looks pricey as we regularly saw the sane journey go from £30 to £7 just by waiting a few minutes.

The ‘plus’ had just started when we went. Got the vip area, premium drinks, nicer areas, late check in/out, just a nicer all round service. We normally had the lounge to ourselves, with two bar staff that also cooked stuff for breakfast. We went during school holidays so it was much quieter in the areas we went.

Lots of places nearby to eat and drink and we really liked the area.

Roads are busy on the island at times.

I guess it started after I had been which was about 5 or 6 yrs ago.
I have to admit unless it was like the carribean Mexico or even Egypt I wouldn't do all inclusive as I prefer to go out to local bars and restaurants.

It was close to the Caribbean experience but not quite there. We didn’t pay a great extra tbf. With our ‘little one’ now close to 20 we will probably revert back to out of school holidays non-inclusive. That said the place in Crete this year was not much more expensive to go fully inclusive that breakfast only. We still go out to eat locally quite a bit even on all-inclusive otherwise I get a bit stir crazy.

Agree. Like Mellieha Bay. Stayed at the Seabank and Mellieha Bay hotels. Easy for Gozo (the small island to the north) and because it’s the start of the bus route you’ll always get a seat. Not stayed in Valletta but visited it a lot. Been all over the island really.

Nightlifey places are St Paul’s and Bugibba. Sliema was quieter and just across one of the harbour inlets.

There’s lots to do and the climate is great. Mdina is interesting as is the old airfield there. There are museums and things aplenty to see. Malta has a fascinating history. The harbour tour is a must do.

Sitting in the square in Valletta on a sunny day with bruschetta and cold beer - one of the pleasures in life.

There were two great sieges of Malta. In the 1560s, the island was besieged by the Ottomans ans survived. In the 1940s the Italians and Germans tried to bomb and starve the island into submission. At one point it was the most bombed place on earth. The resilience and bravery of the Maltese is astonishing and not a matter for debate. Lovely people too.

The story of Operation Pedestal to relieve the siege is one of the most astonishing and moving events of WW2, but that’s for another day.

When you walk around Valletta, you can feel its history. One of the must see places on this earth.

Thoroughly recommended.

Another shout for Db San Antonio Hotel - also agree with Nine Lives as a great bar.

Stayed there in May and had a great time. Bus station is just round the corner and you can get frequent buses all over the island, including Valetta. Just a couple of euros each way.

St Julians Bay George Hotel has a rooftop pool. Was great for my 40th. Buses and eateries, waterfront nearby. Quality.

Yea loads of great bars, cafe's and awesome restaurants.
We stayed in some 3* art hotel right beside the main casino for The Malta Poker Festival. Hotel was great and super cheap.

I remember a really fun Irish bar, where we drank all Saturday watching footy and hussling Pool for beers all afternoon.

The island has a real Italian feel but no surpise as its still ran by the Sicilian Cosa Nostra.

Thank you for all the suggestions.
Have begun looking into the Mellieha and Marsaskala areas as they look a bit more laid back. Good bus links to the rest of the island and to visit Gozo too.
