taking a backpack into PR 07:12 - Jan 9 with 4453 viewsLegendofthePhoenix

I've got really fed up with the mahoosive queues at half time to get a cuppa (SAR Upper) which make it impossible to get anything without missing several minutes of the match. I want to take in a flask of tea in a backpack. But the security seems to have been raised and I'm not sure they will allow a backpack and flask. Anyone know if this is allowed?

Poll: would you rather

Have to admit I find it ironic the club giving the members for this season a travel mug ...
Pretty sure I can't take that into the ground.

As my recent post indicates, I've brought it into the ground empty the last two times.

I have a similar dilemma - I want to take Nigel Havers into the games with me, but he simply won't fit into a backpack.

Knowing most entertainment establishments view on taking your own refreshments into their venue - therefore potentially denying them of income, I would doubt they would let you nowadays.

Yeah i've thought about taking in the flask in my hand, but I'm sure it would be confiscated. Same if it was in a plastic carrier bag.
All I want is a hot drink at half time on a cold day, without missing 5+ minutes of the match. But the club cannot deliver that. If you wait until the half time whistle goes, the queues are ridiculous, and the speed of service appalling. They'd need to more than double the speed of service to get everyone served without missing any of the game.
But the security staff don't care about that, they have their job. If Mark Ashton wants to improve the fan experience, he should either massively improve speed of service, or put some rules in place that allow people to bring in a flask. Oh, and a blanket.

Tuck the flask into your underpants and tell the security staff you're pleased to see them ?

I can confirm you can't take Nigel Havers into the ground unless he has a ticket.

A small rucksack is normally ok but at some point that may change, as I've been warned twice - a book, bottle of water and additional layers of clothing is a bit much apparently - so be aware.

Pretty hard to travel all day to football or go after work and not need more than can fit in pockets.

I've never had trouble taking a rucksack in. I don't take one anymore though since Benters shamed me for even having such a thing.

Never had a flask though. Had a bottle of wine once, but I wouldn't recommend that!

You did look very smart in the suit in the bogs that day,but that’s another story 😚

Man in front of us in SAR lower has a flask at most games, he had it with him last home game as he nearly forgot it.my son also takes one with hot chocolate in with him when its cold and we've had no issues. He's 15 so not a small, un-searched child.

I can never understand why some grounds take sealed bottles off water off supporters but allow metal flasks which could contain alcohol, boiling liquid, who knows what in!

My wife nearly kicked off with a security guy a few weeks back when he wasn't going to let her bring in her small backpack (Fjallraven thing) the fact she'd bought £30 of brownies/cakes from H+H for our dessert when we got home did influence her decision to get irate with the poor lad...

His inference was that it was "larger than A4" so she folded over the top and pointed at someone with the news bags with goodies being obviously larger and he seemed to reluctantly let us pass lol!

I guess some jobsworth may be awkward, but just take the smallest bag you can get away with.

As someone who works with designers and artists, this "bigger than A4" thing is weird to me. A bag is three dimensional, A4 is a 2d paper size. these are different measuring systems.

I am kind of tempted to bring in a bag 20 x 28.7 x 80 cm and hold up an A4 piece of paper to the end and tell them it is smaller....

But, more realistically, i wish football club security would be more sensible. I have been to many away games where they don't let you take much more than basic things in, but if I am travelling across the country to a new city I am spending the day there, working on the train on my laptop, taking a book to read, maybe buying something in town. The idea that we are simply football fans that do not exist in a place and a time for any other reason and simply should exist in the most minimal way to make the football transaction smooth and simple is very annoying.

I often have to have my overnight stuff in a small backpack as I leave straight back to the airport to get home. I have never had any issues getting it into PR. QPR didn't even search it. Sunderland a couple of years ago took my water. The only ground I've had a significant issue was Plymouth. They took it off me and I had to go and get it back from a designated area. I'm fifty plus though and look slightly confused at the best of times, so not probably their highest priority for proper enforcement of the rules.

Are you referring to Beatties for big queues or kiosks? Because from my experience the queues go down quickly in Beatties - never queued longer than 5 minutes

I got bored of raising that issue, I could kind of understand it during the Evans era because there just wasnt the focus on the detail, but its ridiculous for all the focus on revenue now, and the extra revenue more fans bring in, the club do not seem to have the remotest clue about how to actually serve people with drinks/refreshments in the quickest simplest easiest way possible.

and yet you goto stadiums for concerts or football or cricket around the world, with the same constraints of space, people & time, and yet theyve all worked out how to do it.

Are you mad? A flask legally has to be housed in a backpack. We went to war over this to preserve our way of life. I think.

Didn’t the East Anglian Daily Times used to hand out freebies in a carrier bag outside the stadium?

Surely one could place a flask in the said bag ?

Just recently the security has changed

I have always taken a back pack but was stopped a couple of weeks ago, only let me through because I had a child with me.

Adult only i am guessing is a negative

Hope this helps

Top Tip:

You should place the child in the backpack too, and only get it out when challenged. That way you can still enjoy the game, and it will serve to keep your coffee a bit warmer.

I always am bewildered that the security can't thrisk minors. Obviously children have never been used to wear suicide vests.
