Lost our dog yesterday 09:56 - Jan 14 with 1345 viewsgroovyASH

He was more than a dog, he was our constant companion, comfort and anchor. Everything in this house and every routine we had was centred on him.

A massive hole in our hearts which can never be filled. Devastated doesn't begin to cover it đź’”

Sorry to hear that. I love dogs and know all too well what a hole they leave when they're no longer around.

Sorry to hear that.

I don't think my family has yet fully got over losing ours suddenly getting on for two years ago.

We're looking for another at the moment.

I always get rescue dogs and over the years ive lost a few and believe me it breaks my heart over and over again but what gives me massive comfort is i know we gave those dogs a great life and they they gave us so much love back. You obviously gave your dog the same so try to take comfort in that.

I can second that, fantastic animals.

The loss of a pet can leave a huge hole. Sadly it is always part of the deal with cats and dogs.

Better than people most of the time lost our German shepherd-Alaskin malamute 2 yrs ago Xmas. She was 14 so a fantastic innings for a big dog.
Not replaced as not sure how I will be if I get another and it has long life I'd hate nit able to walk her-him plus don't want to burden anyone when I go away.
Kennels not for me.

My cat died four years ago, Monday was the anniversary.

I still miss her, you learn to live with it in time.

As others have said, take comfort in knowing how much your doggie was loved and also loved you, and what a wonderful life it had. It will get easier, I promise :)

I’m sorry to hear that. It’s tough. But you clearly gave him a great life and he enriched yours. There’s nothing more you can ask for.

Dogs and in our case cats? They make a house a home as far as I’m concerned.

They are a huge loss… on 11:04 - Jan 14 with 851 viewsBloots

….anyone that has had a companion like that knows how you feel, I certainly do.

It might not work for you but I’d recommend getting another one as soon as you feel able to. It won’t be the same, or even a replacement, but one of the great things about dogs is that they all have different personalities and you will soon learn to love the new one in both similar and different ways.

It worked for me.

Good luck.

We have a cockerpoo and you think they'll be around forever. (yes, I know he won't be!)

But he's 10 and a half now and you can start to notice signs of aging.

And since Christmas he's had the cone of shame on as he injured himself chasing a rabbit / squirrel over Belstead meadows, and looks very fed up.

The one that died just under two years ago was a cocker spaniel and we'd like another ideally.
We've been looking at rehoming from various sources, mostly cockers but not exclusively, but not had any luck yet. I don't think that a lurcher is what the family is looking for, lovely though they seem to be.

If you know of any other sources of potentially suitable dogs needing a home let me know. We're in north Essex and already watching Spaniel Aid, the local independent registered animal rescue charity and Dogs Trust in Basildon.

Have looked at Aitch already - he's category Blue+ so am a bit wary.

Also, Danaher have our details as we were pipped to the post for a lovely German Shepherd/Labrador cross just before Christmas so they know we're here and actively looking.

….I thought I was buying a whippet.

The ad online seemed entirely realistic, but when I turned up the (Irish) bloke was waiting for me outside his house with the puppy and wouldn’t let me inside because his “wife had Covid”.

The puppy plainly wasn’t a whippet and obviously I should have walked away but by this stage my wife had her in her arms and was worried about what would happen to the pup if we didn’t take her.

I knocked down his asking price by about 75% and took her anyway.

I got a DNA test done out of curiosity and my “whippet” is actually:

50% greyhound
25% dachshund
12.5% retriever
12.5% saluki

Best mistake I ever made!

I wasn't remotely a cat person until my wife decided to get one.

He was a rescue, from the RSPCA shelter near us. Proper arrogant little git - everything on his terms or not at all.

Run over by a speeding cnt in our village on the night of my works Christmas do, in 2024. Driver didn't stop. Not that there was anything that could've been done, but that's not the point.

Weird as it sounds, I was very grateful to be able to bring him home to be buried in our yard. Still cuts me up and I genuinely caught myself getting upset at this year's works do.

Watching our two kittens try and figure out where the big cat had gone was pretty heartbreaking too.

Sorry mate. That's rough, hope the comfort of knowing you gave him a great life and he loved you will in time overcome the sadness and grieving.

Horrible time when that happens.

We had to go with the two dog option in the end. One dog approx 3-4 years older than the other one, that way when we lost one we had the other to help fill the void.

I'm elderly & was also worried about the "what if something happens to me" when I got my Labrador pup (now nearly 3) but was able to come to an arrangement with next door neighbours (who are also friends) that they'd look after him either temporarily if needed; or adopt him permanently if I turn up my toes.

Maybe you can look for a similar arrangement? If you get a mutt as a pup from good breeders, they'll often be willing , indeed keen, to come to this kind of agreement.
