Prices have killed it, along with the fact the youth of today don't drink how we did in the 90's, also you don't need to stand in a crowded bar at 1am to meet people these days.

| So Vodka Revs gone on 17:28 - Jan 27 with 1902 views | catch74 | The whole company has gone into administration. I wept with joy at today’s ‘rescue package/ bail out’ for pubs. Having been decimated by COVID, crazy product price increases, huge energy price increases, massive NI increases, big minimum wage increases, the highest duty rise in 50 years and then an increase in business ratess last year and this. The bail out (or rescue package) is a 15% reduction in business rates. Forgive me for pointing out that that’s still an increase on the 40% reduction this year and 70% the year before. On top of this the business rates have gone up, quite a few pubs by 400%. There was a lot of noise about abolishing unfair business rates for pubs altogether. This is not taxing those who can afford it, or clearing out the dead wood, it’s a calculated final nail in 1000’s of pubs coffins. I’m not sure why - helping big chain pub companies, doesn’t look like it with Stonegate £23 billion in debt and Revs mother company in administration. Does it free up land for development? Not sure. It will seriously impact tax received by the government from hospitality, it has already obliterated the next generation of hospitality owners, feels like a death knell to me. I had an image of Masterchef the professionals with Tim Martin as a judge, ‘today’s challenge is to microwave a vac packed curry and serve with a boil in the bag rice.’ That’s what we’ll be left with. | |

The sort of nightclub that used to thrive in Ipswich is indeed a thing of the past - the late licensing laws for pubs (obviously a while back now!) was the start of that decline, as there was no longer the need to go to a club for the later night out. The reason that places like Revs (Pals in old money) thrived is because they were a bit of a pub/club hybrid. There will always be a place for proper nightclubs, your Fabrics of the world, as well as underground scenes where they pop up but that hasn't tended to be Ipswich over the years bar a few brief flurries! Alternative music, weird and wonderful mix of people - from goths to rockers and hippy types as well as regular clubbers. A pound entry with a flyer, and certain drinks a pound all night. I could go in with a fiver and still have a good time. The only bummer was having A Level Statistics first thing the next morning.

Get yourself on a boat to Gambia Benters.... West African travel advice by bluelagos 27 Jan 18:51You looking to travel or just hit a spot and relax?
For the former, there are overlanding companies that operate in West Africa which would be a hell of a trip. 3 week minimum, best time is the spring before the rainy season.
If relaxing, plenty of tour operators sell packages to Gambia. There is a whole sex tourism thing going on, German grannies with young lads on their arms.
Independent travel, Ghana is pretty cool. Stayed at Labadi beach though the posh hotels have shot up in price as oil execs / workers seek accomodation. Real shame as you could get 5* accomodation for under $70 a few years back, was 5 times that last time I checked.
If you do Ghana then Elmina is lovely too. Really cheap resorts there for silly money ($25) private room looking onto the ocean. Coconut grove my fave, but this was 20 years ago so might have changed.
Freetown in SL was a popular spot with amazing beaches, not been but know many who did.

Wasn’t it ‘Millers’ which was £1 a pint? Whenever I think back to Mondays at Hollywoods the memories make me smile. Watching goths, indie kids and grunge types all dance happily to S-Club 7 and Five during the regular cheese fest..perfect.

Ha, the cheese medley was my least favourite bit. They always closed the night with f'kin Dancing Queen. Yes I think you're right, pint of Millers or a single Vodka were both £1.
