| A boring post 15:30 - Feb 2 with 1962 views | andyblue231 | I’ve been reading TWTD for about 20 years without posting so finally joining in. This is probably a boring first post but today just made me think how different the sport is from when I started reading. I don’t think entitlement really gets to the heart of it, I just think football seems to have become so much more important in peoples’ lives. In the 90s and 00s football supporting was a hobby. It just sort of felt like fun and no-one seemed to take it too seriously. I saw a banner at Rangers a month ago and it said “this is not a hobby, this is our lives”. And I just thought, thats so embarrassing! It shouldn’t be your life! It should be a hobby. Now supporters act like mini employees of the club, and it dominates their whole lives. If we’re not holding the club to account all the time, we’re somehow letting ourselves down. I remember the first game I went to - we were shit - about 1994, the PL season. We were abysmal, I think we were losing to QPR but I might be wrong. But we were all having so much fun, calling for Clive Baker to come on cos he’d fix everything. Feels like everyone used to have a real sense of humour about their club. Now it’s war. Maybe it’s sky sports’ fault - they pump such hyperbole into it and get us all so worked up about it. Or maybe it costs so much now that people have less patience for poor management. It happens to me too - ruins my week if we lose. The truth is, none of this is going to affect your life as much as you think. When we were in league One I didn’t look forward to matches any less. If we’re playing Grimsby away on a Thursday night I’m buzzing just the same as if we were playing PSG. You think Man City fans are happier than us as people? Nah. It’s all just life. So don’t worry if we don’t sign a striker, none of this really matters. Just enjoy the bits of it you can, I reckon. Sorry for the thesis. | | | | |

I've either played and watched it my whole life and sometimes I come across people doing either of those things and wonder if its good for their health, they certainly don't seem to be having much fun. There's enough stresses in life, I'd be opting out of voluntary ones like football if that was what it was doing to me.

Mild cheddar though I promised myself I would never get into an argument on here so in future I will be staying away from such divisive topics

| A boring post on 15:43 - Feb 2 with 1411 views | nrb1985 | Perhaps one of the issues is that modern life has got so difficult for so many people that football and weekend escapism takes on more significance? | | | |
| A boring post on 15:44 - Feb 2 with 1394 views | giant_stow | I hope you keep posting. Personally, I think football is mattering more, because people are less happy in general. Life has got tougher so we all look to silver linings and football can provide that, but only rarely. | |

Yeah I think you both make a good point. Everything seems more stressful now. Although maybe it always was to an extent and I didn't notice because I was young.

Mild cheddar apparently. Straight on the ignore list, which is a shame as the OP suggested better than that. What can you do though, eh? Some people!

Getting there soon after the gates opened just to get a good place to stand, seeing your mates and being thrown about by the crowd. Growing up in the Robson years and watching us winning things probably spoilt me somewhat too.

| A boring post on 17:15 - Feb 2 with 690 views | LRB84UK | Couldn't agree more with this post I've always gone to the football, my parents used to take me as it was cheaper for a ST than a babysitter! Now I go home and away with my mum and my son. For me it's all about family time. The boy is 15 now and I know my time is limited of him wanting to do stuff with his mum and if it wasnt for football I would barely see him. We see friends at the games, we enjoy train trips and days out for the games. We love a rowdy crowd and a rubbish ref to moan about. The results matter very little, my weekend isn't ruined if we don't win, I couldn't care less if we don't sign a striker. I've had a ST for 35 years, my mums not missed a game since 1999 home or away. Our saturdays involve football but the rest of the week I don't give it a thought. I don't constantly refresh sports pages, I don't pop on here every hour, I go about my day to day life. On saturdays we wear our shirts, we go to the game, we spend the time together as a three generational family. We enjoy a pie at the ground and sleep on the coach on the way home. I was told a couple of years ago that I'm "not a real fan as I do not sit in the north stand" this was from a boy who i was probally old enough to be his mother! Imagine being so self entitled that you think you're a better fan as you sit in a different stand! Ipswich town does not define our lives but it enhances it. Oh and my favourite cheese is marmite cheese | | | |

| A boring post on 17:23 - Feb 2 with 637 views | Cafe_Newman | Thanks Andy. Despite the huge success of your first post and the connections you have already made with other TWTD members through stating your cheese preferences, becoming a regular poster here will eventually rob you of your healthy football/non-football life balance. I'm sure you know this and perhaps plan to post every 20 years, but, f it's not too much to ask, could you post your insightful observations, perhaps every year on January/February transfer deadline day for us to ponder in our quests for more meaningful lives? | | | |
