| Student pub chains back in the day 18:52 - Feb 3 with 1834 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | I somehow paid $13 for a pint in New York recently and it got me thinking. Does anyone remember chains like Varsity in UK university cities? I am sure that was thing. Also those yellow cards that were attached to pubs? Maybe Scream pubs I think? Do any of these still exist? Or are students these days not so fussed about cheap drinks, I wonder if they just died out. Back in the "Noughties" how fun was with a wallet full of cards for pints under 2 quid! I just remember these yellow cards that seemed to work in various pubs in the East Midlands and Yorkshire! TWTD indeed! | |

Had to Google, apparently sold in 2010! Early 00s must have been the peak. Pretty sure they would give out their swag at freshers week.

Oh yeah that's right, I was still at Uni when it was sold although very little changed from memory, except the food. Although I preferred Sack of Potatoes up the road.

| Student pub chains back in the day on 19:53 - Feb 3 with 1152 views | stringy | I went back to the University of Nottingham a couple of years ago for the first time since graduating in '87 (giving a lecture at my old department; very weird) and at the end of the evening I thought I'd go and check out my old hall of residence bar. A tad naĆÆve to think you could waltz into a uni residence nowadays, but even if the door hadn't been security coded, the bar was shut, on a Thursday, mid-term. Bumped into a student coming towards the hall as I left and asked them why it was shut - 'oh it's only open on special term meal/party events' they responded. World of difference; in those days it would be hopping and there would be music (usually Cure, Smiths, REM, Ramones inter alia) wafting out of student windows, but nothing, no sound, no life. The mooched to main campus bar, which had been downscaled to about a quarter of its former size. The people in front of me asked for water. sigh | | | |

I wonder if they called the police shortly afterwards! Joking aide, it's all a bit boring now by the sounds of things. Or much more enjoyable and healthy, who knows! [Post edited 3 Feb 19:58]

| Student pub chains back in the day on 19:57 - Feb 3 with 1123 views | _CliveBaker_ | Back in my Uni days in the mid 00ās it was a bottle of wine for Ā£5 on a Monday night, and Ā£1 pints were everywhere. Local student pub in Durham used to do a ādog bowlā Sunday lunch for a fiver as well. Served in a dog bowl but the portions were generous, and always hit the spot. | | | |
| Student pub chains back in the day on 19:59 - Feb 3 with 1108 views | JakeITFC | My uni had £1 a pint Saturday, Sunday and Monday and also a football promotion called goalsaver where you got 10p off for every goal scored. I remember an england game where we stuck 9 past Kazakhstan or someone and so it was 10p a pint. I also remember the Arsenal 4-4 Spurs game (which was midweek but don't think it was a Monday but pretty sure the above promotions were on) and people were just ordering as many beers as they could at 40p/30p or whatever as the goals went in and then if another one was scored they would just be launching them from the bar over people. Simpler times. | | | |

Ha! That's unreal, but a good way to get a full pub for a qualifier against San Marino and hope you can make it up on food I guess! I remember route 66 night for pints at one of the student unions, which I am pretty sure are the only beers I have even purchased under GBP1.00 in my life. Funnily enough there was a $2 draft night in a boozer when I first moved out here years ago, all drafts as well including IPAs. That seemed even cheaper for obvious reasons of not being a student. That place went out of business though! [Post edited 3 Feb 20:08]

Gonna show my age but I was at Exeter Uni in the late 60ds. You could get a pint of bitter in the local pubs for a shilling, but the student favourite ,a pint of rough cider could be as little as 10d. The uni bar didnāt have real ales but the various keg beers available were 1/3d a pint.

Back in the 90s it was 80p a pint in Ritzy, then we had a club called āGasā that had a free bar on all draft pints and halves between 12am and 1am on Thursday and Friday nights. As a result large chunks of the 90s are entirely missing for me, but if you can remember the 90s, you didnāt do them properly.

| Student pub chains back in the day on 22:48 - Feb 3 with 778 views | ZapatasMoustache | In my college bar you could pay £14 for 14 alcopops (all different, all gross) and if you drank them all, you got your money back. Totally irresponsible, and astonishing that nobody raised a peep about it back then. | | | |
| Student pub chains back in the day on 23:28 - Feb 3 with 738 views | catch74 | Funnily enough the first Scream pub was in Farnham near me. Thereās an art college here and the owner got the students to design the interior, theyād get really top bands/ djās in - think he had good connections from his previous job. Did the yellow cards and discounts and it all took off, expanded nationwide but he got out at the right time I think, before it all collapsed. He now owns the pub nearest to me, itās a bit different - a bit Hoxton in the country, the pink trouser types love it - Ā£15 a glass of wine etc and the School mums lap up the smashed avocado on toast. Heās a really nice bloke to be fair to him and doing well still. | |

| Student pub chains back in the day on 00:39 - Feb 4 with 702 views | Blue_Uprising | Was gonna say Scream - originally and in my day called āIts a screamā Spent many days in the one on west street Sheffield in student days. Had an extremely long bar. Also fondly remembering nights with 60p a bottle of 5% continental lager or a VK at places like the Leadmill. A tenner would do you pretty well for a fair few nights if you didnāt mind going out on a Monday - which of course you did not. | | | |
