| Morgan McSweeney resigns (n/t) on 14:29 - Feb 8 with 1669 views | WeWereZombies | In contrast to my knee jerk joke post just now I think he made a decent resignation statement: 'We can now bring you Morgan McSweeney's statement announcing his resignation. "After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. "The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country and trust in politics itself. "When asked, I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice. In public life responsibility must be owned when it matters most, not just when it is most convenient. In the circumstances, the only honourable course is to step aside. "This has not been an easy decision. Much has been written and said about me over the years but my motivations have always been simple: I have worked every day to elect and support a government that puts the lives of ordinary people first and leads us to a better future for our great country. Only a Labour government will do that. I leave with pride in all we have achieved mixed with regret at the circumstances of my departure. But I have always believed there are moments when you must accept your responsibility and step aside for the bigger cause. "As I leave I have two further reflections: "Firstly, and most importantly, we must remember the women and girls whose lives were ruined by Jeffrey Epstein and whose voices went unheard for far too long. "Secondly, while I did not oversee the due diligence and vetting process, I believe that process must now be fundamentally overhauled. This cannot simply be a gesture but a safeguard for the future. "I remain fully supportive of the Prime Minister. He is working every day to rebuild trust, restore standards and serve the country. I will continue to back that mission in whatever way I can. It has been the honour of my life to serve."' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/liv @ 14:24 | |

That's the last thing Starmer should do, the schoolgirl chess champion has started her attack and needs to be left to play it out.

Absolutely . She is totally clueless and does not understand how business works as highlighted by the rates fiasco. Nearly killed of community local hospitality overnight. Starmer In though.
| Morgan McSweeney resigns (n/t) on 14:47 - Feb 8 with 1512 views | GlasgowBlue | That keeps Starmer in place for a bit longer giving Streeting time to make the members like him, Rayner more time for people to forget her tax affairs, Burnham time to get a seat, and Miliband a chance to convince people he is the compromise candidate. Starmer won’t be PM by the time we kick off the 2026/27 season in the Premier League. | |

I think he will. There's little point getting rid of him this early.

So if he badly advised Starmer about Mandelson , what else has he badly advised him about? And Starmer chose McSweeney so his judgement is clearly not up to much..not sure this has done anything to get Starmer off the hook. He’s done for I fear, although I’d prefer him to stay in the job because the mooted alternatives are way more unpalatable

“I have worked every day to elect and support a government that puts the lives of ordinary people first*” *except pensioners, students, mixed nationality families who want to stay together, employees, employers (especially SMEs), spouses and children of people wanting to come and study here for a year, etc. Great job mate.

That will have been worked on all weekend, with all the political advisers and spin doctors involved, so no wonder it appears superficially decent. It's all a desperate attempt to keep Starmer in place because the Labour Together people (including people like Mahmood and Streeeting) fear the members won't vote for one of their lot. This was also the thinking behind the blocking of Andy Burnham. This from the Observer, “Keir abandoned pro-business centrism but it was better disguised. Angela would definitely end it completely,” one senior figure from the Blair and Brown era said. “We now have much more restrictive labour and union laws thanks to Angela. Rayner/Miliband would be a nightmare for the economy and for Labour’s prospects.” They don't like democracy and tried to take complete control of the party but it has rebounded on them. Indeed, some of us foresaw a long time ago that it would all go pear-shaped. And can you really say that the grown-ups have handled the economy well? Sadly, it has meant that decent people like me left the party because of the totally undemocratic nature of what went on (McSweeney being at the heart of it), but it hasn't even succeeded in its own terms. As I have maintained for a long time "he's not the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy." #BringBackSueGray [Post edited 8 Feb 15:27]

As Tony Blair's Director of Political Operations, John McTernan just said on the news, it's not the advice that was the mistake it was the appointment. An it was Starmer who made the appointment.

Do you really think it’s possible for their members to like Streeting? He doesn’t strike me as a unity candidate.

| Morgan McSweeney resigns (n/t) on 15:58 - Feb 8 by WeWereZombies | All the same it does show that a firm decision was yet to be made just a few hours before the resignation, good to see a bit of realpolitick from Labour's head table, it's the only way to deal with what the World throws at you at the moment. |
I imagine they will have been discussing the various outcomes for some time. It has even been reported that Starmer himself is devastated by what happened. Anyway, apologies if I come across as more cynical than you but I do have a fair bit of insight into what has gone on in the Labour Party.

I didn't really pick up on this aspect of his resignation speech which seems to be an attempt in part to shift blame. "Secondly, while I did not oversee the due diligence and vetting process, I believe that process must now be fundamentally overhauled. This cannot simply be a gesture but a safeguard for the future." Starmer made this point too a couple of days ago, but as someone from the Institute of Government said in response to that, there is a limit as to what Developed Vetting (by which it is known and which I have undergone) can find out. And it's not clear to me that any deeper checks would have found out that Mandelson was leaking sensitive information, which I think it the thing that tipped things over the edge. EDIT: by way of background Developed Vetting is described thus in Wikipedia. "DV is one of the most detailed and comprehensive form of security clearance in UK government. It is needed for posts that require individuals to have frequent and uncontrolled access to TOP SECRET assets, or require any access to TOP SECRET codeword material. The process for DV clearance includes: BPSS check. Completion, by the individual, of a Security Questionnaire, a DV Supplement and Financial Questionnaire. A check of both spent and unspent criminal records. A check of credit and financial history with a credit reference agency. A check of Security Service (MI5) records. A full review of personal finances. Checks on foreign travel/foreign contacts. A detailed interview conducted by a vetting officer. Further enquiries, including interviews with referees conducted by a vetting officer." What they are really looking for is inconsistencies or things that might make one subject to blackmail, but in my case they could never have found that (were it the case) I was disclosing secret information to outside persons because that can always be done orally.
