Just constant niggly fouls and exageration / simulation on both sides.

We need to get to grips with how the game is going. Its being ruined.

I don't think common sense is in the laws (I might be wrong). What I do think should be in the laws is a penalty goal, similar to a penalty try in rugby, when there is not just denial of an obvious goalscoring chance, but denial of a virtually certain goal. That would solve the problem here by awarding a goal regardless. (Of course, this adds further subjectivity but is surely more 'just' than a free kick and red card).

He may well have sensibly let it go to see if the goal was scored. Which it was.

He would have been rightly pilloried for blowing at that point, when the outcome was not yet clear, and could readily pull it back if there was no advantage.

But Haaland clearly committed a foul. You can't give that a free pass just because he was already fouled. It's not in the laws. And the laws are what the ref has to follow.

You absolutely can. Justice was done, the goal may have gone in regardless, and the would not have been any complaint.

Without VAR the result is fine and more satisfying.

I reckon fans who support a club with 20 league titles, 6 European cups, 8 FA cups, 10 league cups, 3 UEFA cup, 4 UEFA super cups, a club World Cup plus a load of community shields have earned the right to be expectant on success.

Not sure that is the best use of the term entitled.

Trouble is the ref was wrong twice in a matter of seconds as there was no advantage to play on either foul, he should have blown up for the first one.

True that it may have stood without VAR and might have seemed a romantic goal in a big game but the magnitude of both the errors was huge.

They let the game run with VAR and then pick it apart afterwards. No PL ref blows for the first foul nowadays. Anyway, the officials arrived at the technically right decision quickly. But by christ, that felt like the worst outcome and soulless. I don’t think he’s got much choice to do what he did, unfortunately.

The more this goes on, the more I think Blatter may have had a point when he spoke against the introduction of VAR saying that mistakes are part of the game. Most football people would see that ‘goal’ as one phase of play where City had the advantage and ultimately came out on top - a goal; the right/just outcome, as Harland would have tapped it into an empty net if he wasn’t fouled. But no, we now break everything down frame by frame and have experts pouring over every movement and checking the measurements of every body part. The game was never meant to be like this.

If you say so however based on my experience with a number of Liverpool supporting friends and family, and the number of times I have attended Anfield (25+), I find most Liverpool fans very knowledgeable about the game and quite pragmatic. I would say one of the least entitled fan bases of the established PL and European teams.

I don;t think they expect special treatment

they just want the club to win things as that's what their club has done a lot of.

Completely agree. The perceived need for precision is ruining the element of the game which is often the root of the entertainment. The human aspect of making mistakes.

I agree the law is an ass in this case, but refs can't arbitrarily decide to not follow the laws just because they are daft. So it is the right decision, however stupid it might seem.

I agree and it’s particularly not down to VAR. The unusual and unfair thing there was that szobozlai having already committed a sending off offence was still able to influence play to prevent a goal.

Also, if the goal had been allowed to stand I'm sure there would have been a lengthy VAR check to see if Haaland was offside when Cherki played the ball - it looks like he's just in the City half and in line with the ball but it's close from what I can see..

If VAR get involved here with a perfectly logical and appropriate decision, I give up.

That is utterly utterly pathetic. Good common sense refereeing undermined.
