Twitter (X) Scammer 14:06 - Feb 12 with 2070 viewsTSaltwell

I have unfortunately been scammed on X for Wrexham Away tickets in the league. I'm posting this to make sure others don't fall into the same trap!

The twitter handle is @playhar6851 and they have been a member on twitter since 2017. Having seen their profile, they have been reposting Ipswich related content for about 3 years, stated they were a follower of kings of anglia etc which lead me to think it was real. After sending them the money, they have since blocked me and now are still posting on X trying to sell tickets. The account I sent the money too was to a 'Jake Vernel'.

Please don't fall into this trap!

That's a weird one looking at his profile. Entirely reposting other Ipswich related stuff, no other attempts at sales are showing on his feed but he might be deleting them every time.

By what means did you send the money - bank transfer?

Always sniff a scammer out by asking what stand the tickets in.

Last season there were loads on Facebook, I asked some if the tickets were in the Sir Leon Best stand and they said yes.

So it seems. I note he restricts replies too. Wouldn't stop a few others reposting with comments though.

That's why I got sucked in, it's tonnes of ipswich related content. If you do scroll down far enough though, you eventually get to a load of Middlesborough related content being reposted, so I'm thinking they must just switch between clubs and delete the posts like you said. They seem to repost the same post every 2 hours or so.

Yes sent via bank transfer. No way of getting the money back, which I am not that bothered about, just trying to spread information so no one falls into the same trap! All I was doing was trying to get my brother a ticket for the game, lesson learnt!

Zero sympathy, unfortunately.

There’s no trap to fall into. There’s 1 place to buy Town tickets, and 1 place alone. The Club make that very clear. Anyone who goes outside that only encourages and enables such scams to happen.

No harm in reporting it via official channels / bank and so on, not sure if police will be interested or not.

People can be sh!ts, sadly.

Did you get a distinction for Empathy at college?

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

I have seen tickets advertised for sale illegally, what should I do?
Please send as much information as possible including where they are advertised and how much they are advertised for to touting@itfc.co.uk we can investigate this further.

I don't think it's a bad response, it is an important lesson for sure. I actually have my own ticket through the club, with my away points. It's just my brother asked me if I could get him a ticket and since they're sold out I thought I'd give Twitter a shot is all

If you knew the risk, and took the gamble, then fair enough. But unfortunately, the best way to destroy the model of scammers (or touts) is for people to stop using them.

It might sound insensitive or like ‘victim blaming’, but it’s just the reality. It’s the equivalent of people locking their front door with an elastic band rather than a lock - it’s a naive risk to take, and the best way to tackle the inevitable burglars would be to tackle the easy opportunity being created.

I’d also highly recommend you (and as many Town fans as possible) reporting the post and the profile as ‘Spam’ - https://x.com/playhar6851

The scam works because of the legitimacy of having that many followers. That’s not easy to quickly replicate if the account gets banned.

There's tweets from Boro, Celtic and Everton fans reporting him previously.

The account is based in Africa apparently.

Not specifically related to football tickets but I've bought things from say Facebook and always pay by PayPal (and not friends and family, the one where they add a charge). It's a small price to pay and you can get a refund.

You live and learn by these things. Hope it wasn't too much money.

I called it out on there plus tagged a few people who were following it.

They’ve now protected the tweets on the account. I suspect that they will keep it like that for a few days then go again.

Yeah I noticed that too. Crazy how they can be going on there since 2017 without any action from Twitter/X. When you report them you can only do so without providing any evidence at first. Evidence can only be given if they suspect something is actually happening. I got an email saying my report was submitted, then another email 1 minute later saying that the case is closed because there were no violations and that's that.

Trouble is there’s no tickets for sale, that’s mainly for grassing up people with genuine tickets.
