| Ash Wednesday greetings... 17:31 - Feb 18 with 1394 views | Zx1988 | Not sure I've seen so many organisations and public bodies on social media wishing people a 'Happy Ash Wednesday' as I have done today. I'm sure it's had nothing to do with the 'Very Real Concerns' crowd doing their usual 'What about *insert minor Christian festival that I don't even observe here*?' act beneath yesterday's Lunar New Year and Ramadan posts. No doubt there was lots of frantic Googling of 'how do I commemorate Ash Wednesday' by various social media admins this morning. | |

I wonder how often most of them actually go to church? Mind you, if they're absorbing preaching from the US Evangelical sphere, some strands of that have more to with social conservatism than Jesus, anyway.

It's no different to the club/other organisations wishing everyone a happy Diwali, Eid Mubarak or happy Best Jedi day. For clarity I have no problem with any of them, good luck to anyone that can think of an excuse to enjoy themselves that doesn't harm others.

Literally started this year or so, as Guffers says, it's your lot's fault. Performative nonsense and false piety unfortunately.

Not really. Ash Wednesday is a complete non entity to the vast majority of people in this country. It is not something I have sene marked in my 50 plus years on the planet. So it does look rather passive agressive.

Yeah but this is a thing to hurt others - it's bigots using it to demand and voice and recognition because they're arseholes with a chip on their shoulder. If you took it to ad absurdum there'd be multiple posts per day, just doing feasts and saints days across the different denominations etc.

I've done it a few times, but the services are usually poorly-timed for those of us who keep office hours. We certainly don't seem to go to the extent that some North American parishes do, with drive-thru ashing seemingly being a thing.

And the other celebrations I mentioned are "a complete non entity to the vast majority of people". None of them are of any interest to me will never be as long as they don't negatively impact others. You're looking for something that, to me, isn't there if clubs/organisations are going to acknowledge some religious events then they have to acknowledge all, or they're leaving themselves open to all sorts of accusations. Personally I'd rather the club/other organisations didn't bother as it's causes an excuse for tw@ts on the Internet to have a row.

No. You are really comparing apples and oranges and I think you must know it. Diwali is the major thing. If the message had been about Easter, it would be equivalent to Diwali or Ramadan. But its about an obscure day related to Easter that even Christians, in the large majority, never make any fuss about.

I'd disagree with the likes of Ramadan and Eid. As I saw pointed out somewhere this afternoon, with Ramadan and Lent coinciding, half the world's population will/should be engaging in a prolonged period of reflection. Ramadan is a major event that will impact a significant number of those who follow ITFC. Whilst Easter is of equal significance, Ash Wednesday isn't. All of these organisations are only marking it this year because a bunch of racists shouted at them.

Fair enough. My wider point was I'd rather the club/organisations in general didn't bother as it is always going to piss someone off and it is a pointless act, that benefits nobody other than tw@ts of every flavour who are looking for a row on social media.
| Ash Wednesday greetings... on 18:53 - Feb 18 with 662 views | Sarge | So what you’re saying is posting peaceful messages about observing religious days that aren’t relevant to the majority of the population is pandering. Unless you’re doing it, as you did yesterday with Ramadan? | | | |

| Ash Wednesday greetings... on 19:47 - Feb 18 with 578 views | bsw72 | I’m less concerned about which religious events are formally celebrated and more interested in how we treat each other day to day. For me it’s about personal spirituality and kindness. What does concern me more is how quickly people sometimes choose to take offence, rather than simply respecting that others may see things differently. | | | |

Not on/ for social media I presume which was my point - apologies if my shorthand was offensive I was trying to distinguish the religious from the far right who have co-opted it
