I am surprised and slightly encouraged that the ovedrtly political Supreme Court in the US has showed, on this occasion, a degree of integrity. Or some of it has.

The cynical side of me wonders if they are showing they aren't always Trump's lap dogs here, but will save their sycophancy for the mid-terms in November when Trump asks them to over-turn results.

Agreed, this feels like a relatively small loss in comparison to other items.

Could it go one of two ways? Either what you're suggesting, or that the three Republican justices who dissented have decided that, whilst they're Republican, they're not fans of Trump?

They are very much fans of Trump. At least two are some of the least qualified to ever gain a seat on the bench and are there solely because of Trump.

Except that an appointment to the US Supreme Court is for life. Short of impeachment (which would require a two-thirds majority in the Senate to convict - not realistic along party lines) or murder there is no mechanism to forcibly remove them.

(n/t) on 16:38 - Feb 20 with 1537 views | DJR | There is though something wrong with a system which has meant that it has taken so long for this judgment to be reached. In a properly functioning constitution, this verdict should have been reached before the tariffs came into force. In the meantime, Trump has reeked havoc on the rest of world, although I have a feeling there may be some tariffs he has imposed which are not affected by this judgment. [Post edited 20 Feb 16:42]

I’ve read about conservative judges being appointed etc etc. is that the same over here? How on earth in a country where they think of themselves the land of the free can one person have the power to appoint who they please? Or is that the same here?

no our judicial appointment system in independent and non-political.

There have been 9 sitting justices at a time since the 18th century I believe, although the amount varied before then. They are appointed by whoever the current president is when there is a vacant spot (i.e one dies, or steps down), and are often very partisan appointments.

You’d think that in a country that prides itself on the sense of freedom, its judiciary would have independence, in order to protect democracy and the law from the potential excessiveness of government.

iirc there isn’t a limit to 9 … but what amazes me is the lack of foresight on behalf of the democrats in not balancing the numbers when they had the chance .. that doesn’t have a 4 year effect but decades.

Agreed. When they had the Senate and Congress they could have expanded it but didn't. One of Trump's attack lines for the mid-terms this year (again) is the Dems will "pack the court". I wish they would...

Yep, but they don't. Normally though there isn't a President trying to be a Dictator. The constitution wasn't built for a Trump style leader and it shows.
