Racism/Discrimination in football and society - getting worse 09:40 - Feb 22 with 1978 viewsDubtractor

Just reading this and feeling pretty depressed.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/foot

Feels like there are so many factors (Trump, Farage, Brexit fallout, Lowe's Restore party, Musk and his outright championing of white supremacy, Tommy two names etc etc) all helping to legitimise the sort of behaviour and language that we thought had been consigned to history.

How does society turn the tide back the right way again on this? When those actively stirring this stuff up have such a loud voice and platform to do it from.

We had fascists bussed in yet again up here - they’ve also been leafleting for
Reform and “campaigning” leading up to this week.

However, this. This deserves instant jail in my opinion

I don't think it does. At least until the pendulum swings back that way. I was saying to someone yesterday that I think we're going to get a far right government and the longer if takes the worse it will be. If it's not Reform at the next election it will be Restore or worse at some point. That is my theory. I hope it's wrong. I will vote tactically for any party who can stop those parties but I do think it's coming unfortunately.

I just don't see any way back until that happens with the media happily stirring things up, the likes of Musk interfering (and the bizarre cult where people pander to him) and society being completely split. So few grey areas these days. You are either this or that, rarely anything in-between.

That is bleak stuff mate.

Hope you get the right outcome in the by election, to at least slow some of the momentum.

if enough people vote tactically in constituencies where reform threaten then they can't get in. but the tribal nature of current division risks too many people refusing to do that and refusing to vote however most effectively stops reform. as ever, in reality and in practice, it's the stuff 'in-between' which only ever changes anything.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I had a really enlightening discussion with my local reform branch about why the only thing they’ve done here is leaflet heavily and spend all their time in Gorton, which is the other side of the city.

They typically got arsey and made all sorts of accusations out of thin air. We are dealing with people who just want to be recognised for anything it seems.

The cycle seems to be as follows:

Player makes mistake or is simply on losing side

Fan sends monkey emoji and other abuse

Player posts screenshots of abuse

Club makes strongly worded statement condemning abuse and saying social media companies must do more to stop the abuse

Social media companies do nothing to stop the abuse

Repeat.

I think the issue though is that in a one-off by-election the focus is such that it can often be clear which party stands the best chance of defeating, say, Reform, as happened in the by-election in Wales.

The position is much more difficult in a general election with 620 odd separate elections all with different dynamics, and with different tactical voting sites suggesting different things. And how accurate can such sites be anyway given the great shift in votes since the last general election?

In addition, there are probably few voters that will look at tactical voting sites because many people aren't political anoraks.

And don't forget the Lib Dems are renowned for putting out misleading polling material that indicates they are the party to vote for.

I share your depressed outlook.

It’s endemic. We have overt racists on here that are tolerated, joked with, given tacit encouragement. I genuinely don’t understand it.

The way to stop the rot of racism in society is to confront it! We have to call it what it is at every opportunity. The majority of this country is not racist but feel like they've lost their voice. We have to make them realise their voice can be heard and then amplify it. We need to make the racists realise they are the minority and while they may have strong, powerful allies in politics and media - the majority are disgusted by them and will call them out for what they are!

When you have the most powerful man in the world posting explicitly racist material on social media, and more or less all the people who run these platforms supporting him, it's hard to see the situation improving any time soon.

Slightly closer to home, I know very little of Rupert Lowe, but a quick look on Twitter would suggest Musk and the bots are fully behind him and "Restore Britain".

From the screenshots Fofana posted, it seem like the culprits are from other parts of the world. They're probably part of betting rings and lost a lot of money.

Some would rather a pint down the pub with a racist than someone who suggested that there may have been a rift behind the scenes at ITFC.

"[racist] aint that bad, he seems a decent enough fella when you get to know him"
- Fellow white man says about a racist white man.

Elon Musk is a horrendous ghoul but people still buy his products. "oh i stay on Twitter to make sure all the bad guys are kept in check..." What does he have to do? White supremacy just isn't a big enough turn-off. Maybe he needs to sexually abuse children? But that doesn't too much of a deterrent these days.

Too few are prepared to make a moral stance these days until the problem is on their doorstep.

Decades of the centre-right and right running the country. Nearly all the family silver has been sold off to people who are now making large amounts of money charging us for the pleasure of using it. This applies equally to infrastructure (utilities, trains etc) and housing (something like 80% of flats sold under RTB in the area where I lived in London are now privately rented).

People are unhappy because they don't feel secure, but rather than addressing the root causes, politicians have to use scapegoats. It used to be the EU, but now we're out of that, they've had to focus more on immigrants.

What will help solve it is things like building (or buying) millions of council houses/flats, having a strong welfare state and taking back public assets into public hands (even if they still cost as much, I think there would still be a shift in perception that we aren't being screwed).

It needs brave politicians, but I can't see where it's going to come from; the Tories or Reform are ideologically opposed to the kind of solutions needed and Labour have made it nearly impossible for such people to win the leadership.

There has been an aggressive narrative of lies and exaggeration that has demonised immigrants and others (anyone different from "us"). This has led to Brexit, encouraged isolationism and xenophobia and the general rise of the far right.

The far right has always existed but its popularity has risen dramatically.

It's about time people woke up to the fact immigration is not the big threat to us and society that we are being told it is but that the greed and self-centredness of those telling us to fear them is much more of a threat.
