| WIFI Mesh Networks 11:29 - Feb 27 with 916 views | Steve_M | The board's been quiet the last couple of days without multiple angsty threads so probably a good time to ask this. Has anybody got any useful experiences, good and bad, or recommendations for a good mesh network. I'm in an Edwardian terrace in SW London, it's narrow but long and over three stories and the router is essentially limited to being in one corner at the front. In an ideal world we would rewire the house and add ethernet cabling throughout but that's not an option in the short term. Current broadband package is Sky 500 Mbps which should be adequate in terms of download speed but won't reach to the second floor. There's a currently a very sh1t and cheap mesh in use which I didn't buy but that reduces speed to about 10% on a good day. Clearly any upgrade would be better than and given it needs to cope with two of us WFH at times I'm happy to spend a bit on this. Most likely solution so far is the Orbi 770 I think but TWTD is normally useful on things like this so any advice please? https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGE [Post edited 27 Feb 20:16]

For instance if you only have one extending device, you probably want to make sure it's on the 1st floor rather than the 2nd. The potentially insulting question, if you're reasonably savvy, is do you actually have a mesh set-up or just a Wi-Fi extender? They are not the same thing and the issue you can easily run into on extenders is that devices get 'stuck' on a particular access point (i.e router or extender) and will stick on a bad connection to the router, even if there is a better device 2 feet away.

The Orbi 770 will give great performance and is future proofed with WiFi 7, but is overkill with only a 500Mbps link depending on whether your devices (laptops / phones etc) are WiFi 7 compatible and you are planning to upgrade any of your devices or link. If cost is not a problem then it's a perfectly good choice.

Yeah, those are very solid and very fast. But pricey. FWIW I’ve gone with a Deco system from tp-link and found it pretty good. But I did find I had to fiddle about with some of my iPhones to get them to play nicely with it. Now it is fine.

Been using Tenda M15 Pros for the last couple of years, only WiFi6 but been more than good enough. Thinking about upgrading soon.

Works great for me as well.

One of the units is a long way from the main unit and, altho it warns about a poor connection, it gets perfectly good throughput. I will say though that I don't have super fast broadband so I can't say how well it would work on one. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I might upgrade the WIfi package at some point but unlikely to be more than 1GB if I do. It's the Tenda Novo we currently have, it's supposed to be set up as a mesh but, given how crap it is, then maybe it got messed up.

Interesting, as I had to replace one of my Tenda MX 15 Pro access points as it got it's knickers into a bit of a twist and was messing up the network performance overall. I have noticed that sometimes the Tenda firmware auto update function messes up one of my points (couple of times a year maybe) . . . maybe I need to upgrade sooner rather than later, it was a bit of an emergency buy in Dec 2023.

I use Deco M4, pack of 3. i get perfect wifi throughout my whole home and even down to the end of my garden (and its a relatively good size garden) if need extra you can purchase, maybe in a Victorian build across 3 floor you may need a 4th. I found relatively easy to setup and bonus is if you change your broadband provider and get a new router no need to change your WiFi on all your devices. just plug the new router into the back of the first Deco. About £100 for the 3, so good value. My inlaws had wifi issues with the standard sky router, upgraded to this couple of weeks ago and been perfect since! as a tip, once new mesh setup turn off the wifi on your router [Post edited 27 Feb 15:38]

| WIFI Mesh Networks on 18:06 - Feb 27 with 266 views | ElderGrizzly | The EE Wifi 7 package is really good. I've got 3 storey too, with router at the bottom left of the house. https://ee.co.uk/broadband/wif I'm getting 1.1gb over wifi on the top floor (1.3gb over wifi on ground floor) with 1 main router and 2 other smaller units. 1 towards the back of the ground floor and one on the middle. I did this when I built my annexe, but now Wifi is easier. The redundant Cat 5 cable came in handy for monitoring my battery voltage/solar output though.....so glad it was there. | | | |
| WIFI Mesh Networks on 19:49 - Feb 27 with 180 views | lordsambuca | Previously had an orbi system which worked ok but was on one of the old wifi protocols. Last year upgraded and after research switched to a Deco M4 based system. Much better value and rock solid. Also my brother-in-law has had Deco's for a while and found them to be rock solid. They have an outdoor/external satellite option if you need and you can basically mix and match the different models/variants which I do not think is the same for some of the other brands, if you want or need to buy extra satellites to ensure coverage or deal with blindspots. I looked at the Orbi 7's but could not justify the cost v performance. | | | |
