| After Meheti's opener 09:25 - Mar 1 with 2810 views | Cheltenham_Blue | A chap ran past me down the stairs of the SAR lower to celebrate at the front of the stand. Stopped at the bottom, no intention of anything other than that. Was pursued the whole way by a steward, it genuinely boggles my mind the way supporters are treated, based mainly on stuff that used to happen 40 years ago. | |

With the greatest respect to the fan, and without being rude to the fan there was no way what-so-ever he was ever going to vault over anything. Anyone with a bit of common sense would have been able to see that.

Edgy for saying they were doing their job as someone ran down the stairs towards the pitch? No one is suggesting they stop people celebrating.

Sorry, do stewards not have eyes in their heads then? Let’s have a think, goal 4 minutes in, fans still making the way from the concourse to their seats, on the stairs when the goal goes in. What do you expect him to do? Find his seat before celebrations are permitted. Overweight fan, 3 and a half foot barrier, 6 photographers sat shoulder to shoulder the other side of the barrier. How do you think the steward is meant to know that? Like I said, common sense. Same steward was later letting someone he clearly knew stand on the stairs whilst they had a chat, severely compromising egress. Stewards have one job, spectators safety, which was not compromised by the celebration.

As soon as he got to him, stood in front of him and told him in no uncertain terms to ‘get back to your seat’

Imagine if something terrible had happened… a something that’s never happened in the history of ITFC. It was Swansea at home. Not exactly a high security risk game.

What I'm reading here is that if someone wanted to commit an act of terroism it would be easier to do so at Ipswich VS Swansea than Manchester United VS Crystal Palace... Stewarding can be over zealous and I don't like the way supporters are treated like criminals, but if you're sprinting towards the pitch, I think it's fair for stewards to assume there's a chance you may try to encroach onto the playing surface.

The club and stewards have a duty of care - they cannot take the risk. Too many 'it's never happened before' have led to serious incidents. And the Maidstone fan rolling off the upper tier could have been far more serious than it was. NOBODY could have known what was in the mind of that fan, so why should the stewards take a risk. 999 times out of 1,000 it is perfectly innocent. It only takes 1 though. I'm also pretty sure the same people would be complaining about dereliction of duty by the stewards of that fan had thrown something on the pitch and hot a player. You NEVER know what's in the mind of others in situations like that.

Yes, we have spectator safety at the forefront of our minds at all times, those in the lower tiers also have an obligation to prevent fans from entering the pitch, which the steward did. If you want to moan and complain about a steward doing their job, I’ll more than happily forward the Safety Officers email privately.

Did they do anything to stop the fan celebrating or eject him/warn him etc? Assuming all the steward did was run after him, it really isn't that big a deal is it?
