Those who have been advocating Greaves instead of Leif… 07:05 - Mar 4 with 1715 viewsITFC_Forever

Last night showed why Leif is generally the better option.

I get that Greaves was brought in either to deal with a specific threat from Hull or to protect Leif’s injury, but he wasn’t as comfortable on the ball, quick around the pitch or able to link up with colleagues as well as Leif.

I think we take our best players (and the manager) for granted sometimes.

Horses for courses isn’t it. I would imagine McKenna expected Hull to be more of an attacking force than they were.

Perversely, we’d have been better starting Davis and bringing on Greaves for the final 15 minutes.

Maybe Davis is playing though a slight niggle and McKenna doesn’t want him breaking down with so many games in a short period of time.

I personally thought it was a strange one when I heard the team. My assumption was that Hull’s height from set pieces played a part, and maybe even the fact he used to play for them influenced the decision. It sounds a bit school playground, but I do think that might have factored in.

Greaves did alright, but he’s no Leif, is he.

*Also just remembered he did take a knock the other game..

As well as the minor knock that might still be bothering him he did a ridiculous number of really quick and long sprints in the game against Swansea

The changes didn’t work last night. Greaves looked a bit lost and didn’t seem quite sure what to do when he received the ball in positive positions. And Egeli on the right doesn’t work, we are just too narrow. Missed the width offered by Davis on the left and Wes/kasey on the right.

Regarding Leif, i don't think their is a fitter player in the league. He has one of the most incredible engine's I've seen in a player. Runs himself into the ground every game, seflessly sometimes knowing he may not get the ball but the overlap taking out their players.

Gets found out defensivley from time to time, especially at a level above the championship but we are not the same team without him in it.

He is fast becoming Mr Ipswich, a leader, seems to love playing for us and a lovely lad.

Greaves is a defender, defender, Leif is an attacking defender.

We missed, well Clarke did, Leif bombing down the left wing when he had the ball which gives the fullback a problem and creates space. That's not Greaves game, but to be fair he did provide an outlet occasionally.
Also don't forget when we concede goals from our left side because Leif has bombed forward lots of fans moan Leif's defending isn't great.

I don't think many have advocated Greaves instead of Leif, more just observing he's done well on 2 of the 3 occasions he deputised prior to last night. He's nowhere near as creative in an attacking sense, which isn't a surprise given he's a defender. There's a reason Davis has played almost every game when fit since he joined.

Totally agree.

He is involved in much of our decent attacking play, can only think he was carrying some sort of knock so didn't start last night..

His volume of high intensity sprints in the Swansea game (many of which just took the defender away) was ridiculous and I'm sure he was feeling it on Sunday/Monday. He's so key to what we do that making sure that we don't turn a minor niggle into something that might last longer is worth a bit of a drop off IMO.

Also think we probably expected McBurnie to start and Greaves is better defensively against that type of player on the break than Leif. If Hull had hit us on the break in the first half it would have been a long road back to break them down for a win.

There's a technical / scientific word for the thing he has. Its something to do with muscular recoil IIRC, but basically he's a legitimate freak physically and has an incredibly high level of it which makes him so rapid.

I friend of mine worked with him at a previous club, he reckons he once saw Davis launch a snow ball further than he's ever seen. He's basically made of springs.

With Davis having to come up against Fatawu on saturday i wonder if it was done to give Leif a bit of a breather. He was up and down like mad on saturday, just didn't stop

Interesting. Would make sense as he is not a typical athlete. He does seem to have something extraordinary about him when it comes to energy levels...i'll stick to calling him a freak then....in a complimentary sense of course!

I thought it demonstrated that a combination of Greaves starting then Leif coming on us the game. They both played in different game situations. I said before the game Leif isn't suited to playing against a low block and is more vulnerable to set pieces and being caught on the counter so I would have started Greaves last night.

I suspect McKenna was expecting a more attacking Hull, probably more like they were following the subs. Although in fairness if Hull had played like that I think we would have won comfortably last night.

Also I'd echo the sentiments about likely managing Leif's minute as he expends a lot of effort match on match and the games are coming thick and fast.

A lot of teams like to play that long ball over the full-backs, and I've noticed they get a lot less joy when it's Greaves playing there. Wrexham did it excellently.

Greaves is a better defender and way more capable of handling the aerial threat. But we certainly lose something going forward when he's on the field.

I think McKenna is trying to pick the right option for the opposition. Wouldn't be surprised to see Greaves get a go again against Leicester with Fatawu being such a threat and a focal point of their attacks down that side.

I just think it a game last night where the team isn't going to attack much, its not really one for Greaves.

Coventry away he was excellent because of his defensive abilities and we didn't want/need him to go forward.

However, I agree, on the whole, Davis is much better and suited to the role.

Big fan of JG, however I concede that LD is in general the better bet at home, away might be different at times. I just wonder if he was bought in to give extra help with the perceived threat of McBurnie, but KM didn't know the Hull line up at the time? JG did his job anyway, as did Leif when he came on.

Did hull have any set pieces when greaves and bcburnie were on the pitch?

I wondered if greaves was selected to mark him at set pieces and KM hadn't expected him to be on the bench.

I think Greaves may well have been put in to help deal with McBurnie, who for some reason didn’t start.

Given how Hull sat back for 70 mins and then started attacking, we needed them the other way round. Leif on for 70 and then Grieves to deal with the high balls and balls in behind down our left side.

McKenna out!

Davis 100% should play in a home game when teams set up to frustrate. Need attack minded. Not defensive.

Away - interesting. Greaves is potentially the better option.

Was I mistaken or was it Leif helping the training staff bag up the practice balls after the warm up when everyone else had jogged back to the dressing room ?
