| Palace player’s face deemed to be offside on 23:25 - Mar 5 by Illinoisblue | You’re part of the problem if you agree with that decision. |
You haven’t answered the question though. How would you like them to decide what’s offside and what isn’t? Even if you say there should be clear daylight, or the attacker should be given a certain distance to benefit, you’re still going to have the lines out to measure it. The only way you remove it would be to remove VAR totally, which i’d be all for.

| Palace player’s face deemed to be offside on 07:11 - Mar 6 by RobTheMonk | It sucks and something needs changing. But to play devils advocate, it's consistent to the rules (as sucky as they are). Although in this scenario, players with longer noses would be at extremely small disadvantage lol. |
Having thought about it, I think that you’re right. Goal line technology will say ‘no goal’ if just 1mm of the ball stays in front of the goal line so I guess it’s the same principle for offside. As you say, at least it’s consistent for everyone.

The issue I think I have, if not most people, is the consistency of it all. You can have 2 games at 3pm, that both have the same contentious handball decision and in one game it gets given as a penalty and the other game it doesn’t.

I’d prefer it was gone I believe it’s spoiling the flow of the game.

But that’s a false comparison - handball comes down to human interpretation of the law as well as intent. But offside, is a stone cold technological decision of on or off.

I can never remember this sort of outrage 10-15 years ago if someone’s nose was ‘offside’ and if wasn’t given as offside though. Bring back the daylight rule.

Totally agree. I much prefer being at PR this season and just having a quick glance over at the lino before knowing I’m safe to celebrate. Last year was totally sh*te with the waiting around. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Football is a lot quicker now - in comparison to nowadays, football in the 70s looks like it’s played at walking pace. Refs do need some help as it’s not as easy for them to keep up with play now as what it was.

Everyone hated it when offsides were missed. It drove people mad. That’s why they brought it in. No-one is happy with it and no-one will be happy without it.
| Palace player’s face deemed to be offside on 14:07 - Mar 6 with 148 views | SamWhiteUK | I'm wondering if VAR should only be used to correct decisions that the referee/linesman actually give. For example, if the linesman doesn't flag for offside, then offside isn't checked by VAR. But if the linesman does suspect an offside, he waits for the game to play out (as they do now, and unless it's ridiculously obvious) then raises his flag, and then it'll be checked. Same with handball, if a player handles it, but the officials don't call it, tough. But if the ref blows up for it then it's checked. Red cards for seriously foul play perhaps should stand as-is. Thoughts? | | | |

It was much better before. People moaned but that always will with referee. We got on with the game. Now you have referees on television doing 30 minute segments on VAR decisions! Football is about the free flowing game, the ref and linesmen being human, and, above all, about knowing a goal is a goal.

All we want is consistency. All we want is common sense. We don’t care about results we want pretty football. We don’t want pretty football we want results. If you are offside you are offside. Have you ever been an AR at any sort of level? Sometimes it’s very hard. If someone’s nose is a problem you need another interpretation - hip or ankle or something. No matter what is used it will always upset someone. Same with ball over the line. AR must be in line with second last defender - shot from 25 yards hits the crossbar and bounces on/over the line - whelp. Goal line tech to the rescue (Lampard World Cup v Germany anyone?). It’s Laws of the Game not rule book because laws are to be interpreted. Hence one ref gives handball and another doesn’t. Law five paraphrased - the ref is right when they are wrong, don’t like it don’t step onto the pitch to play. There’s an element that says we are here because people complained too much about refs being little dictators - perhaps the needed to be full on megalomaniacs?
