Information moves too fast for printed newspapers.

I would never buy a newspaper these days when I can follow live coverage of breaking news on my phone.

I have noticed the same with non fiction books. Obviously some are timeless but others are outdated within a couple of months of being printed.

The websites of these papers are completely up to date, and I imagine many now get their news this way. Certainly that was what the old codgers* on the bus were looking at.

*I say that an old codger myself having recently reached state pension age.

A few issues with your post:

I think you might want to ask the people in the tower block in Kuwait or the hotel in Dubai whether it has cost them nothing to allow the USA to use their bases.

Additionally, is the war as legal as Putin's invasion of Ukraine?

Labour's disarmament programme? I'm not sure who has been in power for the last 15 years or so but it wasn't Labour.

The Arab states loathe Iran and visa versa. Who have Iran spared in the area? I don’t know but since Kuwait owe the US for kicking out Saddam it’s pretty obvious why Iran targeted it along with the others. Not so obvious is why we let down those we considered trade partners if not allies like Kuwait.

There is no legal. We are in pre WW2. The Wild West if you like. It was right to defend Ukraine. Trump’s ratting out on them is a disgrace. Most of what that idiot does is a disgrace. My point is that going for Trump on this issue is stupid. Nothing to gain, everything to lose bar a hope of increased political support domestically. That’s not right and wrong, it’s politics which I hate.

It might become as fashionable to defend Iran’s regime (see protests) as it is to support terrorist regimes like Hamas, but it will never be so with me. Iran is run by people from the Stone Age and exports it’s horror anywhere and everywhere. Ive no problem with the Iranian leaders being rubbed out.

However, it’s never as simple as that, simple though Trump is. Has he gone about this in the right way for the right reasons? Doubt it. More informed than me including some on here are better people to ask. I just believe that it was the wrong time and wrong place to pick a fight with Trump.

Disarmament has been going at a rapid pace for decades and accelerated during Cameron’s crazy austerity time. When 2014 Crimea was stolen (against the written agreement/guarantee of U.K., US and Russia) the red light flashed. International agreement? It was a guarantee that quietly went in the bin.

Did Cameron care? No. Poisoned people in Salisbury? Who cares. These were warning signals but the cuts continued and the scrapyards never busier. We are now 12 years down the line and it’ll soon be two year of Starmer. Anything changed? Nope. Everything must go.

But it’s ok because the spin machine can mug off the plebs with numbers and words. Yes, the corrupt tories have bear huge responsibility for our weakness in every way. But they’re not here now. Finished forever thank goodness.

The ball is in Labour’s court.

I disagree. The only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to them. If you don’t they take everything from you including self worth. You’ll get beaten up time after time, but eventually you’ll inflict enough pain on them to make them go away. Why? Because bullies are essentially afraid.

To the point in hand, I don’t think Starmer made the decision. Those who run ‘the Party’, Milliband and co did. The decision was I think made because they thought it’d make Labour more popular. Party and self first second and third. What’s right and wrong? Our principle-free Politicians haven’t done anything on that basis in decades.

The decision for me was a stupid one for several reasons. Firstly, allowing the US to use those bases would cost us nothing. Denying them wouldn’t stop America but we’d derive no benefit. People like Trump are binary. You support, you don’t. There’s no compromise. If you don’t, you are supporting Iran - a home of terrorists and truly and an appalling regime.

No point in bleating about ‘uman rights in Iran now. We stood by and even shut our eyes when a drone fell on Akrotiri, not that we could do much not even armed with a water pistol.

Secondly, by allowing the US to use those bases it would have kept us out of the spotlight so the sudden light being shined on Labour’s disarmament programme which is of course in full swing still. We can’t even send a rusting little destroyer and I doubt those aircraft carriers will make it out of Portsmouth. They have a tendency to catch fire and are short of crew anyway.

We have shown to our friends in the region we cannot be relied on one iota. You could argue that these countries are pretty awful themselves, but as the Brexit debacle has proven, you need people to trade with. Partners and allies whether you like them or not. If you are head honcho in say Saudi, how will be viewing the U.K. who stood by as the drones piled in? Bottom of the list at best.

Lastly, I keep seeing posts with phrases like ‘illegal war’. In what way is it illegal? The post war international ‘rules’ written by the Americans? There is no ‘illegal’. I know Starmer is hiding behind it but it’s a nonsense. They’re gone so get over it Sir Kier.

There is right and wrong, but everyone's basis of that will be different. There is power and the exercising of it. Might is right. That’s how it’s going to be. So back to the bullying analogy you can either build yourself up to a point where you’ll be left alone or you can carry on disarming and ploughing funds into your priorities (party vote, essentially), sing a few ‘give peace a chance’ songs and hope for the best.

This is just how I see it today with a bad mood. I’ll probably take a whole different view tomorrow and I guess that just reflects the lack of information and changing scene day by day.

Edit: one of the carriers is out of action in Rosyth anyway.

Can't blame Starmer for the Navy. Boats take a long time to build. Got to look back to the previous 14 years for those responsible for the current state of the navy.

For new equipment I agree. You cannot build that stuff overnight. But Labour have been in 19 months and bar yet another review to kick the can down the road, what have they done? The ship that is still in Portsmouth still can’t go anywhere. Interesting article in the Independent on this:

https://www.independent.co.uk/

In summary, no spares, contractors Serco don’t do weekends, the hollowed out navy has a lack of kit, crew, underpinned by a government that isn’t interested. You may not be able to build new stuff, but you can make what you do have serviceable. You can also source from elsewhere if you see a need and are prepared to spend money - just as we did in WW2.

They mumbled about increasing defence spending. Yep, in five years time. Whoopee! In the meantime, costs of stuff like the security services in addition to support for Ukraine have been lumped in that budget. In other words, they see no threat or are concentrating on other ‘priorities’ so in real terms - cuts. Fine, it’s not dozing at the wheel, it’s a policy decision. Done lie about it, be honest.

The Iranian situation has been building for weeks, but when it came to it nobody in this country was interested, despite Iran being what it is and the inevitable consequence of the Israelis and Americans attacking it.

1- The Iranian situation is not ours and we need not be involved. So there is no imperative to prep for it.

You said it ‘is’ fashionable to support terrorist organisations like Hamas.

Where, please? Fashionable with who, please?

I think the majority of people protesting against war do not support the Iranian regime.
