Do we want to go up? 12:58 - Mar 8 with 2544 viewsWallingford_Boy

Seems an odd thing to ask, but is getting to the Prem what it’s all about?

I mean, the cash would be handy, but we’re hardly skint.

The Prem is a painful watch these days, no one taking risks on the ball anymore, sideways, backwards, sideways, diving, faking injuries, VAR, etc.

I didn’t exactly enjoy last season and can’t really see next season being much different if we did go up. The championship is nice, we win quite a lot!

Or am I just trying to make myself feel better after yesterdays result?!

RIP Sir Bobby

Championship is by far the better League. No VAR, more games, better supporters, more competition.

Let's face it. Football at the top has been ruined by money and it's living off the fumes of the era when it was really exciting as it positions itself as an entertainment product for casual fans rather than a sporting affair.

Teams like us and Forest used to be able to win the biggest competitions. Will never happen again.

Yes, mainly for financial reasons.

No doubt the Championship is more enjoyable, especially if you're doing well and winning games. The PL is soulless, but in reality the club gets stronger if we yo-yo rather than stuck in the Championship.

The question for me is if we do yo-yo, what does KM do? Does he leave on a high after a promotion season, or on a low after relegation?

Perhaps we should ask the 6000 on the waiting list? Other than that it has to be Premier League. I just don't like the hangers on and tourists. I remember being one of the 300 at Burnley on a Tuesday night when Jewell was in charge. Pretty grim night but that's when the real supporters turn out.

Do I detect a little sarcasm!?

Just putting the question out there, at times I doubt going up is for the best, but I also know deep down that I’m dying to get back to the promised land!

Sarcasm? Yes. I understand the sentiment behind your question and have no issue with discussing the question at all.

I was responding to algy's comment and the suggestion the top 6 leaving would help the competition. I would further counter that with which top 6? Historically there have been plenty of changes as to who they would be. Blackburn and Leicester have won the competition (albeit with heavy - and in one case unlawful - financial backing). Are Tottenham, Chelsea and Man Utd amongst them? Where did they finish in each of the last few seasons? Are Man City included? It isn't all that long since they weren't in the Premier League and what impact will a potential sanction for them have in the short term? What about Everton?

How would Brentford feel about not getting matches against those "top six" (whoever they would be)?

Surely in any sport you should strive to reach as high a standard as possible? Thats how i see it anyway..

I want us to win promotion, for the high that comes from that, and what it will mean for what we watch over the coming months.

I'm utterly indifferent about being in the premier league though.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Got to keep striving to be as good as you possibly can at the highest possible level. It's completely achievable to establish a club of our size in the Premier League, whether that's next season or in the next 5 seasons.

Absolutely this and we would find it a far more enjoyable competition if we were competitive in it, too.

I want the success of achieving promotion and the money that it brings the club. But I am still a bit scarred from last season and would happily compete at Championship for another season or two. I do not think we are ready to compete at Premier level with the current squad and it would take a few amazing purchases to prevent another year of pain. Give us the success and the money and let us opt out.

For me it's purely down to money

Of course it is that’s what it’s only about now the money.

Of course we do, otherwise what is the point. There is the money but also that's where the best players want to play and promotion is how we retain the best players. Look at Brighton, Brentford and Bournmouth - they have made a success of it and are smaller clubs than us (in terms of support and size).
What would we not want to get promoted?

Yes

Otherwise our owners will sell up and we could end up dropping down the leagues.

Ignoring the PL vs Championship comparisons for a second, the romantic in me wants to go up so that Kieran McKenna is successful this season - if we go up, he will have achieved 3 promotions with us, and can leave on a high if he wishes, or hopefully stay and we will be better equipped than last time to try to stay up.
However if we fail to get promoted, it may be seen that he's 'failed' 2 seasons in a row, which would be a sad end if he did leave at the end of the season.

Yes from the financial side, but probably not football side as unless major change we won't win many and has McKenna and the recruitment team learned anything from last time I'm not so sure.

We’ll need to replace 10 players regardless, so might as well do it with another £120m in the bank rather than a lot less if we don’t go up.

Get promoted, recruit best we can and see how we go
