April is going to be pretty brutal 10:06 - Mar 9 with 1086 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Not sure we’ve ever had this many league games in April?

Monday 6th - Brum (H)
Saturday 11th - Norwich (A)
Tue 14th / Wed 15th - Pompey or Southampton (A)
Saturday 18th - Boro (H) (Probably moved to Friday night?)
Weds 22nd - Charlton (H)
Saturday 25th - WBA (A)
Tue 28th / Wed 29th - Pompey or Southampton (A)

That last rearranged game in particular will be a matter of days before the last game of the season. This years equivalent of Coventry away in 23/24. Could be huge.

It's pretty mental. And it's an absolute disgrace that we've been left in a situation where a game that was originally meant to take place on the 29th of December is now having to be shoehorned into an already crowded April, right at the business end of our season. It's a good job we've got a deep squad, we're going to need it and then some.

The very slim positive might be that we're facing more sides with nothing to play for by then, unlikely to apply to the first two matches regardless but perhaps some of the others.

The combination of postponed games and the ridiculous FA Cup scheduling this year is incredibly frustrating though.

Can't and won't use it as an excuse but we have been hit ridiculously hard by scheduling issues this season, haven't known anything like it for years.

It's looking like the month that will define the season. If we can get a win tomorrow you would fancy us at Sheff Wed. Then what would be a huge one at home to Millwall before the break. I think we're in the territory of needing 7 or ideally 9 points given Boro are in the groove.

While nothing is given, the final day fixture at home to QPR couldn't be much kinder.

As you say if we can tee it up with a big finish to March, April is going to be make or break. We're very capable of going on a good run through that lot, and will likely need to beat Boro.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on teams with nothing to play for. Because we are Ipswich Town, the team with the big cojones everyone wants to bring us down.
I now am afraid I see us as being in those dreaded play offs. I hope not. But Coventry and Boro keep winning. When Boro play us they will be intent on a draw and a win if they can nick it as will Millwall.

We've only managed a run of 6 games unbeaten this season, not seen any evidence of us being capable of going on a longer run as of yet

Boro keep winning?

They won their last two but prior to that they hadn't won in three games. They've been streaky all season.

Depending how its going

If top 2 is gone by boro game. Do you begin to rest players and plan ahead for play offs rather than the best team for all games otherwise we could end up going into play offs with a really tired side.

Top two won't be gone by then, or if it is then our form will have been so bad that wargaming the paly-offs is going to be pointless.

Seven league games in April is not particularly unusual. It was the norm in the 70s and has happened on 16 occasions.

The most league games we have played in April is eight, which has happened eight times, most recently in 2023. Can't remember how that season finished...

Fair point, although there's 8 days at the start and end of the month that are fixture-free so the 7 games we've got to play are going to be squeezed into 22 days. Then an 8th fixture a few days later at the start of May. It's a tough old run of games and the midweek trips are all away from home.

Pretty sure we had 8 games in April 1981 . . . won 4 and lost 4 including a painful defeat to Norwich 1-0 away on the 20th . . .

True but we don't necessarily need an unbeaten run.

All if's and but's, but if we win tomorrow night we then have Sheff Wednesday on Saturday which, while nothing is given, should be a win. Follow that up beating Millwall and we would go into April on 73 points with 8 games left. 6 wins and 2 defeats from the 8 would get us to 91 which you would think would be enough (assuming 1 of the wins was Boro). Given the final day fixture that's probably a case of beating Boro and 4 of the other 6 in April.

Its a big ask but we shouldn't forget we're a win at home to Boro and away to Pompey away from being above them. That effectively would reduce the other 9 to being about keeping pace with Boro. They would need to outpace us.

Ultimately its 1 game at a time, need to win tomorrow night.

Correct, but only five league games.

True, I only skim read the OP but not sure why it matters what the game is (1981 was 5 league, 1 x FA Cup and 2 x UEFA Cup).

The fact is they all mattered in 1981 and they all matter now.

Very unfortunate that our two games in hand away away against teams of which one is very much in the play off mix and one isn’t yet safe. Would be nice if Southampton slip from the top 6 and Pompey get a few wins to pull clear before we play them.
