I suspect using the situation as an opportunity for aggrandisement is much more of a motivation for Trump and his associates than trying to actually play serious international politics. I genuinely believe this is true, I think he uses the power of the presidency to make money for himself and those in his inner circle. That's an unknown but historically having nukes has protected countries.
My point is more that Iran has threatened to close Hormuz before but not done it. Now that have shown the ease with which they can do it they don't really need a defensive nuke stockpile (although the fear was they would use it offensively), they can just close the straights and cause huge damage.
